Firewind Takes a Wall of Sound to Europe

Last Updated on February 14th, 2020

Gus G. is a busy man these days, having just finished a tour with Ozzy Osbourne that paired him up with Zakk Wylde & Slash and then add to that his new album and world tour and you get a man that is determined to make his mark on the music scene. Plans have already been announced for a series of free clinics across the United States. Given all that has happenend, we figured it would be a good time to check up with Gus and see how things are going.
How was the tour with Ozzy & Friends?
“It was an unbelievable experience! Not only having these legends on stage and jamming with some of my idols, but there was a very good vibe on the tour and everyone seemed to enjoy it very much. Of course as a guitar player it doesn’t get any better jamming with rock icons like Zakk Wylde & Slash!”
Congratulations on the new record. How did you approach the recording of  Few Against Many – was there a particular direction you wanted to take this album in?
“Thanks! The whole idea was to make a heavier record with lots of guitar. There’s lots of more riffing compared to the previous records we made and I feel it contains my most mature, but also most technical playing I’ve ever recorded. Strange combination one might think, but there was room for shredding as much as there was for melody. I’m very pleased with the final outcome and it was a very focused and relaxed album for me to do.”

We recently heard that you will be coming to America to do a set of free clinics, do you enjoy doing clinics?
“Yes, I will be out there in early August doing 4 select clinic dates to promote my new signature Blackstar amp, but to also discuss all my gear, play some of the new Firewind songs, and discuss music in general. Of course a clinic is not the same feeling as performing an actual concert, but it’s cool in a different way. You get to meet fans and people that support you and discuss questions they might have more in-depth, talk gear and stuff like that.”
When you were learning to play guitar did you ever attend any clinics yourself?
“No, I didn’t and I wish I had. But I live in a smaller city in Greece and back in the ’90s there wasn’t much of that happening over here. It’s much different these days.”
The single “Wall of Sound” seems to be taking off having received a recent gold award in Sweden – how did this song come about?
“It was one of the first songs I wrote for the new album. Actually the main riff came in at the last minute as a “fill in” part in the song. I quickly realized it was a very cool riff and needed to be repeated within the song. So, I ended up re-arranging the whole thing and made this the main theme / riff. I like the modern vibe of the song overall.”
