7/8 String Soapbar Size Now Available
Ever since active pickups came out and many guitar manufacturers starting building with them in mind, there’s been one problem – the standard size of active pickups (Phase II) is different than the size of regular passive humbuckers. Changing out … Continue reading

Q&A With Gus G of Firewind/Ozzy Osbourne
Between Firewind and Ozzy Osbourne, Gus G’s got this whole guitar thing pretty well stitched up. And he knows his gear too: he has signature equipment from Blackstar, ESP and of course Seymour Duncan, and he’s got the technical knowledge and musical intuition to put it all to good use on albums like Ozzy’s Scream and Firewind’s latest, Few Against Many. We recently caught up with Gus for a chat with our Facebook fans. Continue reading

Inductance: What It Is And Why It Matters
A pickup is nothing more but a large strand of copper wire, wrapped thousands of times around a holder (called the bobbin) forming a coil, and somewhere stuck to the coil you have a magnet. In some very simple designs the magnet itself can be the bobbin! The wires of a pickups are extremely thin – something like the thickness of hairs, maybe even thinner. But there is no such thing as a ‘one size fits all,’ standard wire. Continue reading

Seven-String Pickup Options
One thing 7-string players continually cite as an attraction to the extended range of the seven is that they can still play everything that they could play on a six-string guitar – as well as getting down into much lower musical territory. And that’s true of tone too: the sounds you get out of your six-string pickups are also available from 7-string versions. Many of our popular models are available in versions for 7-string players, and even if we don’t offer a production 7-string version of a six-string pickup you’ve just gotta have on your seven, the Custom Shop may be able to help! We’ve discussed choosing pickups according to your style before. We’ve also had a bit of a look at choosing pickups with respect to the wood: what wood works best with which pickup for which style? In this article I want to explore some possible guitar, pickup, style and tone choices. What goes good with what? Continue reading

The Philosophy of the Fat Strat: Single Coils and Humbuckers At Peace
Some people call them HSS Strats. Others call them Fat Strats. Some people don’t care for them, others don’t know what they’d do without them. Either way, you can’t deny the appeal of a guitar that combines the feel and mechanics of a Strat with the chunky kick of a bridge position humbucker. Continue reading

Nile’s Karl Sanders On Metal Tone, Technique And The Gate Of Sethu
Nile’s latest album is At The Gate of Sethu [Nuclear Blast], an impressive slab of technical death metal loaded with ultra-precise riffs, eerie atmospherics and plenty of the band’s trademark lyrical focus, which finds much of its base in Ancient Egyptology. Continue reading
