Soldering 101: Keep It Clean

By Seymour Duncan Tech Guru Scott Miller

When it comes to soldering, messy is not the way to go. Keep it clean—the tip of the soldering iron, that is. This will help the tip transfer heat more easily, and enable you to make good connections more consistently.

The easiest way to do this is to have a damp sponge handy (not dripping wet, just damp). Once your soldering iron is fully heated and ready to use, quickly tap each side of the tip on the sponge.  This will cause any solder glumps and clumps to solidify and fall off, leaving you a nice, clean, shiny, soldering tip.

If you don’t clean your soldering tip in between connections, it can get coated with a build-up that will cause it to work less and less effectively.  Keeping it clean is an easy, and simple way to help make all of your installations go smoothly.
