Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
I agree go for the plain dot
I had the satin for a week - it had very sharp fret ends and I ended up taking it back

MMmmmm, that's not good !
Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
What pick ups, stock, Duncan or Gibson will get me closest to the Gov't Mule, "Lola Leave Your Light On" tone ?
I know it is mostly the amp, but will the stock pick up do the job, or will some other unit be better suited for that raunchy grit ?

I heard he uses the pearly gates in some guitars. I bet you could make PGs work pretty nice for that sort of tone, and they'd be able to handle most other things people use 335s for (i.e. all flavors of blues and lots of classic rock, some modern country, etc)
Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
Classic '57s will do everything you need to do with that guitar. I would personally try to go used. For a gloss figured-top, they seem to go for between $1800 and $2300 in my area. I paid about $1800 for my "sold but unused" Guitar Center return about four years ago. Wonderful guitar, mine is in a finish called Antique Sunburst.
The gloss finished 335 is a better deal, I think. I think they take a little more care in the build.

Or........save yourself $2100 and get one of these.

Since you don't plan on reselling it, then resell value doesn't enter into the equation. Even if you just gave away the Sheraton for free, you'd lose less than reselling either of those Gibsons. You could afford to put a lot of $$ into the Epi (new pups, pots, switch, strings, fret job, etc.) and still come out ahead...way more than the resell value of the Gibson. And IMO, you'd end up with a much better guitar.

As someone who went for a faded les paul studio over a gloss LP studio, I can say that if you're one of those "shut up and just play!" kind of guys, you'll probably love the satin one.
+1

Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
Whoa! This thread got me thinking. When I sold my 333 back in 2008, I asked the guy to contact me if he ever wanted to sell it. I just searched my e-mail, and I still have the e-mails we sent to each other via Craig's List. I e-mailed him, and he still has it. He said it served him well for a few years, but he hasn't played it much lately. He asked if I wanted to buy it back! :D
Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
I like the satin finishes, but IMO the 335 needs neck binding or it just looks wrong.
Compromise and save some $$ and find a used 333 - satin finish AND neck binding!!

Thanx Bill.
I know very little about the Gibbo units.
Replaced my faded SG's stock units with A2P's and now i love that plank !

I would definitely not throw out the Classic 57's until I lived with them for a while.

I agree, though. That was funny.
Re: Which is the better value 335 ?
Obviously, I'm with Ace on this one.
Tease me all you want, but I love my Sheraton and would take it anyday over either of those. Not just hot air...I've had a 330, 335, and 345. All very good instruments, but if you factor in the cost, there is no comparison.
