Give it to me straight... What's better?
Alright. I see the 59/custom hybrid is going to be available (although I don't know when) and its got me wondering...
One of my main stage guitars has a Duncan custom in it and I really like it, BUT I want something similar but with slightly less "balls" for an alternate guitar without changing my amp settings.
Would you say that the brobucker or the hybrid would be better? Or something else maybe?
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Honestly I would go with a 59 or PG if you want less wallop....maybe even a Seth Lover....
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Really? Isn't that quite a drastic difference if I were to keep all amp settings the same?
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Actually, it sounds like you would be much happier with the 59/C5 hybrid. Similar to the Custom, but with "less balls". The high end is a bit smoother, less brittle sounding, but still very present. Solid bass with warm even mids. A little lower output.
It really surprised me how wonderful the hybrid sounds. I was expecting it to have much more of the '59 character (which is good, but I find the '59 has too much treble and not enough mids). And since I love the tone of the C8 so much I was expecting to need to put an A8 in the hybrid, but the polished A5 C5/59 has me hooked.
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Yeah the hybrid sounds very cool to me but does anyone know when it will be available?
Any other pickups you can think of??
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Either one is a pretty good choice for what you're asking, the bro is the smoother of the two.
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
I have heard that the hybrid is going to be out after 3/10/12. I have already put in my order. My idea was to build my own, until I heard that Seymour was going to build them. Then I didn't have to buy a 59b to match w/my cc, therefor ending up w/an extra pu I wouldn't need.

Just an FYI, the only difference between a custom and a C5 or CC is the magnet and 99 of 100 hybrids have a C5 mag due to the 59 half witha ceramic would be overly bright. So truthfully the pickups are 59/C5 hybrids already.
You gotta remember the c5 came out 15-20 years after the Custom and came about due to the forum.

No new info here.
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
dimarzio 36th bridge PAF will get you there. Thats why i am selling mine because i already use a custom and the 36th is a lot like it but power:)
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
36th anniversary PAF huh? I'll have to find some sound clips.
I'm not afraid to go with a PAF style pickup because the sound great but my only concern is it being a very drastic difference between that and the custom, because I need to keep the amp settings the same, but have a little less umph.
I used to use a 59b which seemed to work but the mids lacked a bit, which is also why I went with the Custom after using the C5 originally.

the dimarzio 36th is hotter and has more midrange body than the 59's or seths.
I would say the 36th when set kind of close to the strings is almost as hot as the C5 in output:cool2:
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Ok then. Now we're talkin'! I'll have to look into it.
I must admit though, I have close to zero experience with dimarzio pickups

Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Or you could try putting an A4 in your Custom before spending a lot of money on a new pup.

Pearly Gates! ;)
Ive heard some reviews on the DMZ board and even the LesPaul boards that say the 36th can get pretty nasty if you push it hard. I dont know what kind of music you're into or play, but I knnow that Pepper Keenan of COC used the Pearly Gates in a few of his guitars at one time or another. Again, a PAF style pickup, but his tone is thick, meaty and heavy.
Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
I've never played a pearly gates bridge pickup but after reading about the overwound one that somebody has, it definitely got me curious

Me too. Im on the fence about a Custom or Pearly Gates. With the right amp, a low output pickup can do heavy. Hey, Mark from Lamb of God used the 59 for years.

Re: Give it to me straight... What's better?
Hey by the way guys, I need a real nice p90 to go with my bridge humbucker for this guitar. Do you have any suggestions Duncan or other?
Also congrats Ed!
