Default Baritones, why are they not more popular ?

Guys, who use these long scale axes ?

    . . . aren't they s'posed to be used for heavey de-tuned "stuff" ?

If so, why are not more bands using 'em !

I mean, there are sooo many bands out there that de-tune there regular guitars, why not just use a Baritone to get that super low B-tuned tones ?

Except for Mike Mushock from Staind, who has an Ibanez MM sig Baritone, who else use them ?

For me, it just makes sence to use a Baritone for, Melvins/Unsane/Electric Wizzard type tunings, right ?

    . . . or am i missing something ?

    Cheers

It makes sense, but that doesn't mean you HAVE to do it. It's called 'preference'. Kind of like how you CAN use a Mesa/Boogie half stack to get a high-gain metal tone but I'd rather use my Bassman and a pedal.

I play in drop A, and I use 24.75" scale guitars. Works just fine for me.

A lot more guys use them than you'd think. Korn, a bunch of numetal bands used the ESP baris, dude from Chevelle (prototype PRS bari)....

I owned a Yamaha Drop 6 awhile back, and thought very highly of it. Very well built, sounded great, played great.... I just ended up preferring the tone of a standard scale guitar tuned down. Something about it is a little more evil, kinda like using lighter strings when you tune down.

I guess I'd just rather sound like Justin Broaderick than the dude from Staind
Buy the book in my avatar. It's pretty cool.

Electric Wizard has always sounded great as they are. What do you think that they would gain from a change? Why fix something that isn't broken?

To be honest, I like the tone of a 24.75-25.5 scale guitar in dropped tunings more than extended scale axes. The extended scale seems to make everything a bit *too* tight.

I've tried a few, and just can't dig em.

Daron from System of a Down has a baritone Iceman. I think the reason most bands downtune regular guitars is because they can do pinch harmonics with them. Apparently it's harder of baritone

I'd think it would be the opposite, pinch harmonics are probably the only thing easier about playing a longer scale instrument. Your fretting hand has to stretch and it takes more force to pick the strings, but with a pinch harmonic you're picking in the node of the string's vibration, which would be larger on a longer scale instrument, thus easier to find.

I would like a baritone. But I would still keep my main axe in Drop Bb or C standard. It just sounds evil as hell, I think of baritones as sounding good clean.

George Lynch had an ESP signature bari that AFAIK was used on REvolutions and Wicked Underground for the low-tuned rhythms.
Duncan Pickups in currently in use: '59 (rewound to PATB-3)/'59, Custom 5/AP2H, Tapped QP set for Tele, Duncan Distortion, SP90-1/SP90-2

wow.. man what strings gauge do you use?
for me on 24.75" scale a set of 11-52 even in drop D feels to loose.....

I use a 12-52 set and on my 7 string I have an 80 for the low A.

Part of the problem with baritones is there isn't a coherent vision of what a Baritone is? There's a huge variety of styles so most of them are niche products. If there was a more common definition of what a baritone is and there were more utilitarian models being produced they might be more popular.

The guys from Corrosion Of Conformity were using baritones for a while. Modest Mouse and A Perferct Circle have used baritones on a few recordings also.

Before I got my baritone, I put 13-56 string on my Squier and tuned it down to B to see if I liked playing that way. Now that I have a real baritone, I still use 13-56 strings, and it sounds fine. I think part of the reason more people don't have baritones is that they are just produced in limited runs by each company. Also, people seem to do just fine with 24.75"-25.5"-scale guitars tuned really low.
    Turn me on, Dead Man.
