Default I must be maturing (getting old)

In the past few months not only have I realized that the gain knob turns to the left and the mid know actually will go to the right I just realized that pickups ARE able to lower . . . weird eh?? they don't have to be as close as possible to the strings, and the payoff is clearer thicker tone with less interfering noise. Works wonders with a Custom and with a dimebucker . . . . . next thing you know I'll be using low output humbuckers

+1 bro! The most questionable advice I ever got was from the lead player in my first band - "It doesn't matter what you're playing, use the bridge pup and set the volume and tone on 10!" It's just amazing - the different tones I can get out of ANY of my SD pups by twiddlin those knobs.

And the funny thing... the older you get, the more older you get even faster.

    TOO TRUE !!

We get too soon old.....and too late smart.

This must appear like a hijack...not intended...and now.... back to our original program.

I always played with maxed mids... So no trend for me. I'm wondering if I'll ever turn it left hehe...Though I too have stopped playing metal. Exclusively blues now.

Variety is the spice of life... I like all kinds of gain.

What I do not like are big mid spikes - they make my ears bleed. I will never dime my mids.
Duncan Pickups in currently in use: '59 (rewound to PATB-3)/'59, Custom 5/AP2H, Tapped QP set for Tele, Duncan Distortion, SP90-1/SP90-2

"come on, even to play blues and country i use high output pickups, it sounds so good "

Well i think that when you're trying to play with a CLEAN style and focus on your playing dynamics, you obviousely end up using mediu mor even low output pickups.
For me it doesn't mean getting old makes turn the gain down, it's just that too much gain doesn't give you a better sound or more agressive, it turns your sound into mud.

I mean I still PLAY metal but i always prefer to have a good sound coming form the amp an dguitar than distprtion pedals or distortion pickups that totally asorb your pickinp attack and do not reproduce all the subtilities of your playing.

Look at george lynch, he sounds HEAVIER than ever but he uses low output pickups now....

Now if you're not totally satisfied with the sound of your guitar, high output pickups will help you "cover" it.

Yet some high output pickups like the custom 5 are totaly comparable to the low output pickups.

Vintage output pickups lack of bite to me. Too polite sounding.
For me the Screamiong demon has the best of both worlds.
Next i'll try to swap the magnet on my custom 5.
