Kinman Mod -- killer for P90's and humbuckers too

Done! A quick bend and a touch of the iron and its in.Hopefully I'll get the pickguard on the guitar tonight. This has my new Zhang pups and the mod now and I havent played either yet. I also put in the Callaham blend plot for the neck pup with the bridge.

You don't even need a diagram it's so simple. A 130k resistor in series with a .001uf cap (some do it parallel but I've never tried it that way) across the two non-ground lugs of your volume pot. The end.

Wait, so what you're saying is that a guitar wired the standard, stock way will get a higher treble to bass ratio as it is turned down, instead of just producing a lower volume version of the same tone? And this mod will change that?

No. A stock pot will get duller as you turn it down. A stock pot with just the .001 cap across the non-ground lugs will get brighter as you turn it down. But add the resistor to the mix and it's just right...

Guys, it`s no shopping time (Sunday), but i found some 130 resistors and a box full of 1n0 capacitors in my workroom. Am i lucky with those caps?

Ok, heres my question. What mod do I have to use if I want the bass to treble ratio to stay exactly the same as it is normally no matter what I turn the volume to?

The bass and treble ratio already stay the same with a normal volume control. The problem is what we "hear" and percieve as a high-frequency attenuation as the volume drops. Getting that balance will be different for you than for me, and to our wives altogether. (Women generally have a higher sensitivity to high frequencies.)

Well, I did it and it really does what Zhang said. Now it bites like a madman when rolled all the way down, cutting through is not a problem.
I`ll try it for few days, and i`ll maybe put a different resistor to tame it a bit, cause this duncan custom really shows it`s ceramic teeth now. VERY strong treble.

That's it, but .0012 cap is fine -- actually the exact spec recommended by Kinman. But .001 is close enough.

What I do with my Ibanez guitars that all came with a 330 pf treble bleed cap is to put a 180 KOhm resistor in parallel with it and it works like a charm.

I've been thinking about this, and if a 130K is correct for a 250K pot, then a 240 should be about right for a 500K pot. The math really is that simple, in this case.

In theory, the Kinman mod is the correct way to do a treble bypass. (Sounds like heart surgery, doesn't it?) The parallel method works, perhaps, but it's like using high octane gas because your parking brake is on. It will also screw with your volume pot's taper. Just a cap alone gives you no control, you'll have to keep making the cap smaller until it's only passing hiss. The Kinman mod gives you control over both the width (cap - frequency) and depth (resistor - volume) of the bypassed signal.


Thinking some more, I realised the value of the cap should be matched to the capacitance of the cable.
