What do you guys think of matching an AirZone in the bridge and an SH-2 Jazz in the neck?
I've done a research for the AirZone. Based on some comments and DiMarzio's site, the AZ is known in doing a good job in dealing with a wide range of frequency. It has the capability of doing that chug-chug palm-muted sound and also can superbly do harmonic overtones. Very versatile for a bridge pup... but even if the AZ has all these capabilites, DiMarzio consider it as a medium out-put pup. The AZ was based on the (more famous) high out-put ToneZone. The only difference is that the AZ has a lower magnet pull resulting in to better dynamics! Really interesting, itís like having a high out-put bridge pup but still intact with good dynamics. Whatís more interesting is that it could even sound like a single coil when tapped or split dealing with those twang-twang sounds. The AZ also uses an Alnico for its magnet instead of ceramic. Honestly, I havenít tried the AZ yet but I'm really looking forward to it...
the Jazz... i really dont have to expound on it but the Jazz is famous for its articulate clean sound. Perfect for the neck... I preferably like the SH-2 Jazz for the cleans.
these pups are of extremes and are on the far ends of the spectrum. Each pup does it job perfectly in different situations. Knowing that the AZ is good for the bridge and the SH-2 is a classic for neck (in terms of the doing the cleans). Iíve concluded that these two would be a great match for my Ibanez SA-320X H/H configured guitar. It has a 5-way switch capable of coil tapping and splitting. (See figure below). They would be a good match in terms of dealing a vast range of musical genre... (clean to colorful distortion)
but the question here is, would they compliment each other when mixed..? I havenít tried them yet and I was wandering if they would blend perfectly when used at the same time either as full humbuckers (pickup selector at the 3rd position. placed at the center) or when split (at the 2nd-postion. place between the bridge and neck position)? Iím planning on putting these on my Ibanez and Iím scared whether the AZ would overpower the Jazz...
what do you guys think? Has anyone here used or tried an AZ/SH-2 combo before?
Thanks for everything... cheers!
