Everyone, if he asked which steel wool to use, I told him because the finest grain would be the best choice among steel wool. However, I prefer not to use steel wool, not even when removing paint from wood unassociated with a guitar. I prefer to clean fretboards with a product that says it's for fretboards, not lemon oil, nothing but something formulated for fretboards. That or rosewood / ebony oil (based on which variety you're conditioning), in pure extract form.

Unless you have some reason to polish the frets - which is usually unnecessary, the absolute best product to clean the gunk off a fingerboard is Windex along with some paper towels. The gunk will just melt off.

No, it doesn't hurt the wood - rosewood or ebony. Follow up the cleaning with a good lemon oil treatment.

You CAN cause some real damage with steel wool if you don't know what you are doing.

You could just do some goo-gone, that's basically just citrus oil.

Bah. I found two shops that carry all grades through 000 but 0000 seems to not exist.
Same for shielding copper tape. I may need a friggin' arts supply shop for those

It's not easy being a guitarist.

    ... in a small town....

Just buy a pre-shielded pickguard, or some shielding tape off StewMac, etc.

Buy a little can of shielding paint from StewMac. Best thing you'll ever buy, as it has so many uses. For example, to fix the rear window defroster / heating element on a car, to put a dab on the threads of your 1/4" guitar cord jacks so that they don't loosen on you, etc.

    Pierre

Are you in Edinburgh at the moment? If you are pm me with your address and I'll sort you out some 0000 grade steel wool. I have some left over from when I was finishing the top on my oak dining room table. I can replace it easily if needs be and you seem to be having rather alot of trouble!

    Cheers

Nah Amsterdam In Edinburgh I take care of my guitars more often so I don't need steel wool, I just condition the fretboard. I think I figured out where to get some here in the Dam though. Thanks VERY MUCH! That's very kind of you
