technically, if it is on an acoustic, it is a "pick guard", but if it on a strat or similar, it is "pickguard". i dont remember where i read that, but ill try to find the site.

according to Wikipedia (which someone may have posted and I missed), it is spelled pickguard as that spelling brings up a brief history of pickguards on guitars.

Pick guard (as two words), brings up nothing.

    I vote pickguard.

Yeah, I checked Google before posting and saw the Wiki reference. Not what I'd call "definitive."

I think we should just settle this with the creation of a new name for the thing:

    Body Protective Apparatus

Use it in a sentence, It actually sounds really cool.

"To install the pickups on my strat, I must first remove the Body Protective Apparatus."

I'm all for that, but I think it should be lowercase, and the first two words should be hyphenated as follows:

    body-protective apparatus

I had it uppercase for dramatic effect. But I like the hyphen. Good work man. I'll notify Merriam-Webster immediately of our suggestion.

    That's teamwork!

(We'll have to trademark the name for it to be all caps.)

True that. (yeah good call too).

I was thinking, another benefit of the term is its not only biased towards "picks." The body-protective apparatus is designed to protect the guitar from a number of things such as sweat, jewelry, or debris. Therefore the term "body-protective apparatus" does a better job of encompassing all possible uses for what the body-protective apparatus is intended for.
