Default OMG i need help wiring !

Hey guys ive been building a guitar with my Dad, and we thought of experimenting simply because well we have too much time on our hands lol!

Were having difficulty understanding the logic of the wiring system that i have decided to pick for my pickups.

Firstly the guitar will have 3 single coils AND 2 humbuckers.

Now the single coils are not in the same system as the humbuckers in anyway so bare that in mind.

Basically i want the humbuckers with the pull/push so i can turn that to single pickups also.

What i would like is a for the single coil system and the hum bucker system chosen by one toggle switch... the humbuckers (bridge and neck) chosen with a different toggle switch. And the 3 single coils with the 5 way switch!

But i want them all to use the same volume pot! I don't want like 3 individual volumes other wise the guitar will have so many switches and knobs it will look like something out of James Bond! hehe

Any one possible to draw up some wiring for this cos we aint experts on this, and can barely work it out :S

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum, SirChick!

You must wire the two circuits separately (the humbucker one and the single coil one - you can find help in the schematics of this page also for that).

    http://www.seymourduncan.com/support...f/2h_1v_3w.pdf

    http://www.seymourduncan.com/support...s_1v_2t_5w.pdf

Just wire the pickups and the switches. Leave the pots out.

Then the only thing is to cut the hot wire of the vol pot (the one that would normally go to the pickup switch) and put a switch where you will solder the hot wire of the vol pot and the two outputs of the two pickup switches. In the picture the 1 goes to vol pot and 2 and 3 go to the two outputs of the circuits (pickup switches).

I don't really remember what's the english name of that kind of switches but if you go in an electronics shop they surely can help.

    Good Luck!

Edit: I made some edits to better write some things....hehe

I'm finding it difficult to vision what is suppose to be connected to share the same volume.
Because the humbuckers have 2 tone knobs one to make them single pickups, but would i need 2 push/pulls allowing me change both to single pickups when needs be ? :S Or do i just pull for single then toggle switch to select which one i want as single..

The single coil setup is obviously the same as fender strat pickup setups two 250k tone knobs with 5 way switch, but sharing the same volume as the humbuckers.

Then to top it off i need a switch to select either single's system or humbucker system LOL So basically like an ON/ON switch which i guess is simple enough.. its mainly the pull/push and the sharing of volume is whats confusing me.

should the volume go before or after that on/on switch ? I can envision alot of quality lost cos of all of this wiring lol!

If i draw a hierarchy of the setup would that help make it more understandable, cos my terminology is not great on this subject :s

The volume must go after the on/off switch

You wire the two systems (humbucker and single) WITHOUT the pots.

Then you connect them with the volume pot with a switch and after the volume pot you can connect the tone pot.

The hierarchy is humbucker circuit and single coil circuit -> on/off switch -> vol pot and tone pot.

If you use a toggle switch for the selection of the humbuckers/single coils you don't need a push/pull pot.

If you don't want to use a toggle switch for the selection you can use a push/pull volume pot. It's the same thing.

I'll try to make a schematic for you.................give me some minutes.......

I would do something like this:

    I hope that helps.....

Ask any questions if you need to......

    Good Luck!

Ok that is looking closer to it but i need 2 tone for singles and then 1 for humbuckers so 3 in total...although if they can share 1 and the single coils have just 1 tone extra separate would that be possible?

But what do i need to get the humbuckers to separate to single like the likes of Joe Satriani has...? is that what you have put in as the brownish box up the top of the diagram near the humbuckers? ?

That box is the 3-way switch for bridge-neck humbucker selection as it's shown on Seymour Duncan diagrams.

So you want common volume and separate tone pots.........hmmm.......I'm not sure how you make this at the moment. I'll think of it........

I hope this isn't to much complicated.......

Just keep in mind that I've never tried and tested such a wiring, but that's what I would try to do. I hope it'll work

Sorry, I'm not aware of that Joe Satriani thing but the switch for the hum/single is that square thing with the 1,2,3 numbering for its lags. The numbers are too small though.

I've seen some 'double pole - 5 way 'Strat' switches' on a parts site somewhere recently.

If you could get one, then:

Wire on side as a 'Strat' the other as 'Gibson'. Then use a push/pull in the volume position to switch between wiring 'types'. Grunounding the un-wanted p/us.

Use push/pulls in the two tone positions to switch between Cap values, or for phase wiring etc.

This should mean you won't need another switch in a visually odd place.
Hope you have enough room in your cavity though?
Approach each pickup group as a seperate guitar.
Please don't ask me to draw it.
Post pics when you finish for us to ogle!

    Good luck.
