    Default 250 vs 500 with a cc

i had a cc in my strat with 250k pots and thought it sounded pretty good. i would have liked just slightly more volume, but it was very good. now that i've gone back to a cc, i'm wondering how 500k pots will affect my tone. from what i've read, it makes it brighter and slightly louder. this sounds pretty generalized though. what difference does it really make? will a 500k pot thin my sound at all? is either one recommended for a cc?

I had a 250K with a Custom Custom for a short while. It seemed a bit dark to me, the change to 500K did the trick and didn't seem to thin my tone at all. If anything it gave it a bit more "balls"

Go with the 500k. The CC with 250k is too dark, IMO. You'll get some more presence and push from it with 500k. That is one pickup where I always recommend a 500k volume pot with it.

thanks, but here's another question: how do you think it will affect the stock SCNs in my strat?

I've never used them but I would say that it migth make them a bit hotter and a little brighter. there is a mod out there that allows you to make a bridge humbucker see different values that the neck and middle single coils but I'm not sur how it's done.

I think ErikH has done it in the past, you might ask him.

To me, the difference between 250k and 500k is very subtle. Then again, "subtle" can be the difference between so-so and perfection. This is one of those things you just have to try for yourself to know for sure.

    Its worth the effort.

The SCN's might get that sparkle that seems to be missing for you. It's worth a shot. IMO, the CC is best without a tone pot as well, just the 500k volume pot. Leave the tone pots hooked up to the SCN's.

Don't forget - you can always turn the 500k to about 7.2 on the dial for the "250K" effect, just to ccompair

Actually, no, that doesn't work. Because of the way a volume control is wired, it will always load the pickup with its full value no matter where it's set. It does work with a tone control, however.

go with a 500k vol pot, and use resistors so that the single coils "see" 250k
that would be the best option
