    Default Stage Prop Ideas

Hey guys my band needs some inspiration for stage prop ideas for an upcoming gig. We are the only band of the night, and we have university tech services (who do sound, lighting etc) at our disposal. Any ideas?

    Suggested things so far:

    Stone Henge
    Smoke Machines
Dragon bursting out of the PA (could be difficult)
    Midgets
    Giants

    Cheers

In these situations, every band must ask themselves one question:

"Would this be more convincing if we were wearing capes?"

If the answer is "Yes," then don't do it.

That said, no prop in the world can compete with a really cool light show.

Yeah. Strippers would be my first choice. Go-go dancers would be my second, but you have to have a cage or a pole for each of them and they have to be hawt. That way if the band has an off night, your audience still has something else to look at and be entertained by.

    Agreed.

If you have access to lighting and sound, I would have them do just that. I'd rather sound good and have a decent lighting setup than have any props.

    Depends on the band.

ZZ Top on the VH-1 Rock Honors it went over well. Same with Rob Zombie and some of the live clips of his I've seen.

The stuff you have planned could be cool, but are pretty difficult to get together, except for the smoke machine. All the other ideas are also stuff that has been done (Dio was battling a dragon on stage on his 1986 tour, Stonehenge/dwarves is a rip-off of Spinal Tap), and I would claim that it wouldn't work to do it twice, of course, if people that are coming to the show isn't hardcore Spinal Tap fans.

That being said, I love huge stage shows. In my opinion, a concert is supposed to be a feast for both the eyes and the ears, and if you play the kind of music where you feel a lavish stage show would be appropriate, that's great. Very few people do it these days. But you should try to come up with something a little more original than Stonehenge.

One more thing: Before you even consider stage props, think about this: Are the band doing everything they can to make the show interesting? If you have any, look at a tape of your band, and see if there is anything you can improve on, both visually and musically. Unlike stage props, here noone is going to complain if you rip off ideas from established acts.

There are loads of other things you can do. Consider wearing some special clothing on stage. If you are into that kind of stuff, you can easilly make some choreographed moves for the band. As an example, you could start with doing a slow, syncronized headbanging, and try to develop that idea from there. Discuss how you are going to behave on stage. Most concerts are much more planned out this way than we realize. When is the different members of the band allowed to take the spotlight? How is the singer going to present the songs? Are you going to do some extended cuts, with jams, or perhaps getting the crowd to sing along if you have a really catchy chorus?

What I've mentioned above is all tried and true ideas. Nothing groundbreaking, but it all works and makes the show more enjoyable if done right. It's not a record your making, you are playing a show. The people who watch are willing to accept a couple of mistakes more if you make the whole thing more entertaining.

I saw an effect once that is pretty easy to do and looks intriguing... I want to do it some day.

Have you seen those passive roof fans that look like vented globes? They turn when heat goes through them. They are about 16 inches in diameter.

Anyway, you take some vent pipe about four feet tall and place these on top of the pipe. Then inside the pipe, on the floor, you place one or two 150 watt flood lights - pointing up. The light goes through the globe vent, then as the heat builds up and they begin to spin, the light is reflected out onto the stage.

I know you usually don't really need anything adding heat to the stage, but it really looks cool.
