Default Do you have guitar for certain genres?

I have been trying to play faster songs on my PRS McCarty lately... Faster palm muted alternate picking riffs and what not and its been hard, I feel like the bridge gets in the way of my hands being able to pull of fast passages...

I have been thinking that maybe I need to get my hands on an Ibanez/EBMM/ESp/Jackson of some sort that is better suited for technical and instrumental music.

Do you guys have certain axes you go to for certain types of music? Like do you have a Jackson Soloist for shred and metal and then a Gibson LP for blues and classic rock? Or do you only have a Tele and a 335 and cover all of your ground with those axes?

If you do, list your guitars and what styles you primarily use them for!

PRS McCarty : hard rock, blues and modern pop
Gibson SG: classic rock, Santana jammin'
Fender Strat: blues and poppier stuff

Those are the uses I am starting to realize.

    Hmmm let me think...

    Fender Strat: everything
    Gibson SG: everything else

hahaha they each cover a pretty broad spectrum and i can get similar tones (with obviously different 'flavors') by turnin the knobs and flippin the switches...

of course 'feel' wise, the Fender lends itself more to open strumming chords and the Gibson has more of a 'lead' feel, but nothing stops me from playing chords on the Gibson or leads on the Fender.

I think the biggest thing for me is the output of the pickups...my Fender is a little lower output which makes it a little harder to squeeze out those Slayer tones i like so much, but it's still possible...and sometimes necessary because my SG doesn't have a whammy bar, haha

Maybe I should mix it up a little..? Get a Floyd'd Jackson with active pickups and a Tele with only single coils to widen the gap, haha..

I play them pretty equally, except the Tele can't do thrash. It can do post metal with the right pedal, but there's only so far Texas Specials will take you. My P90 guitar actually works far better for metal than I thought it would, but for the rest of teh genres it's a toss up, they all sound good. ( I find I play the "best" on the LP, so that's usually the choice for faster or technical stuff. The TOM gets my hand away from the body and the thinner neck really fits my hand like a glove.)

I use my epi lp for a mix of classic rock, some metal in dropped d and some blues. I've a got a carvin for classic rock, hardcore, any shredding I might wanna do and some blues if the occasion strikes. Once I get my agile up and running the way I want it, it will be my downtuned metal guitar almost strictly.

I don't necessarily think you have to have different guitars for different genres tho, it does help tho. If you practice your technique a lot with a certain guitar you like, then you can pull off anything you want with it. Peopl have told me lps aren't the best straight up metal guitars b/c of their thick necks and whatnot, but I'd never want to use a different guitar for metal.

Most of my guitars are for Blues and Classic Rock, but that's what i play more often than not. I have an RG770 which I'll generally play when I get into heavier stuff.

I use my strat to play everything. I can actually get an amazing Van Halen tone with a bridge single coil.

I tend to go with Black or Cherry Les Pauls for Metal.
Tobacco burst Les Pauls are definitely classic hard/rock
    Tribursts are better for Jazz
Blues and Southern, and a lot of Classic rock goes well on Amber Birdseye Les Pauls

I have a basswood shredder style esp I use for mostly metal stuff and high gain solos. I have a mahogany esp that is much more versatile that I use for hard rock, metal and anything I need a clean tone for. However, I'd like to get a tele for my clean stuff.

Slimmer necked guitars are much better suited to faster/technical riffing.

The RGT42 and Carvin for fusion and hair metal.

Rickenbacker for jazz, blues, and classic rock.

Tele for country, and when I need really really agressive metal.

Kramer for old school hair metal.
    Carvin custom strat (P-Rails/hotrails/single - Tuned Eb) -> Pod XT - - 6505+ Halfstack

Jackson w/ EMGs for metal and even sparkling, deep, hi-fi cleans.

Epiphone Dot for that beautiful hollowbody sound that can do most but metal, and also struggles w/ the articulate stuff.

OLP for when I don't mind breaking what I'm playing :-)

edit, ALSO, PRS is great for Santana jams..

I have a wide variety of guitars for just that.

Funk/Blues - Fender EJ Strat, hands down

My main stuff (rock/pop) - Gibson R0 LP Special DC or Collings 290 (both with P90s)

    Jazz - Collings 290

    Harder rock/soloing - PRS McCarty

My Strat can cover pretty much anything, but I use my Tele for Ska and some Nirvana and U2. I also use my Tele for ALL NOFX that I play. Tele also gets RATM and other metal usage. Strat is used for most punk, all blues, some metal and acoustic-simulated tones (acoustic songs but too lazy to grab my acoustic, ya know?).

I try and have a few flavours around the place, though it's more important in the studio than live.

My Reverend Flatroc covers the Gretsch thing to a degree, and also does a nice fender-with-a-bucker sound.

My Tele gets used for everything, but only gets occasional use in my hard rock band.

My semihollow does duty for both my bands, but more for the rock stuff.

My strat and superstrat sit around feeling unloved. I also have a couple of pawnshop prizes lying about the place for specialty applications.

Right now I'm gearing up to build a p90/mahogany guitar that'll replace my LP jr, mostly for use with the rock band. I could also really use a full hollowbody guitar for recording, as semis only get a certain amount of 'thonk' onto tape.

My G&L Legacys are my Number One guitars, and they get used for most of the country stuff, the pop tunes, the R&B, and some blues and some classic rock. If I want a humbucker tone, I'll opt for one of my Les Pauls, 335s, or Ibanez Ghostriders. The trick is finding the right guitar for the right song.

I don't do any metal, but I still do some harder rock and some fusion jazz/rock--nothing as heavy as Satriani, though--and for this type of stuff, I'll go for one of my G&L "strats" that have higher output pickups. The G&L S-500, Comanche and Legacy Special all have pickups that are hotter than the vintage alnico single coils in the Legacy, and they all have their unique flavor.

I'm playing in a band that does such a wide range of material, it's hard to know what to plan for. On some gigs, I will have as many as six instruments: a five-string banjo, an electric 12-string, a Taylor 710CE acoustic, a Legacy, one of the hot G&Ls (as above), and a Les Paul or 335.

In re-reading that last paragraph, my only thought is: if I start playing gigs where I need my 5-string banjo AND a "Metal" guitar like a Jackson with a Floyd Rose--I'm doing gigs that are WAAAY too weird, and I need to retire! LOL!

I play alot of covers so I have many axes tuned or set up with the purpose of covering those tunes.

For example I use my SG for AC/DC, Sabbath, and punk rock tunes.

I use my ESP or Explorer for Metallica, Slayer, and other "metal" songs.

I use my strat for covering RATM songs.

Any my LP for Zeppeling and everything else in between...
If I know I'm going crazy, I must not be insane.

I sure use different guitars for different applications.

I'll use any of my guitars for pretty much anything. There are the few exceptions though. I'm not going to play Metallica on my Texas Specials loaded Strat...LOL. I'll grab Frankie or the Maiden Strat for that.
