You're probably thinking of phenylketouria, or PKU. it's a rare genetic disease among people of Eastern European descent. There's a US-mandated warning, in very fine print, on every can, box or bottle of aspartame product.

That said, I'd rather have the side affects of Splenda -- diarrhea's easy to counteract with some mashed potatoes.

+1. I also hate the feeling that the enamel on my teeth have been slightly eaten away at after drinking normal soda.

+1 to what you and Venom have said. Regular soda makes me feel about half nauseous and it gives me the "itis" also. It is nasty stuff!

aspartame gives me headaches in large amounts, sometimes splitting ones. I can usually take a couple cans of diet coke, but i prefer the stuff with real sugar
