    Default Money problem. Need advice.

For the past few weeks, I've been putting my off hours into scrapping aluminum from unwanted signs that my company throws away. Through a whole lot of sweating and no small amount of bleeding I have managed to amass 1,600 or so pounds so far. I called a local scrap company to see about getting cash only for my work and they told me that I needed to call them the day before I was to arrive with the scrap so they could get the money together. I called the company Tuesday to let them know I was coming Wednesday so they could be prepared (cash only) when my dad showed up in the dump truck loaded with all my hard work. My pop shows up yesterday while I'm at work and they weigh him before he dumps the aluminum and then they weigh him after. He goes in to collect the money and they hand him a slip of paper noting his weight and the dollar amount to be payed, but it isn't an IOU or a promissary note etc. It's just a note with a dollar amount on it and the weight of the scrap aluminum. They tell him that they don't have the money and he will have to come back today to get it. Instead of telling them to load the aluminum back up, he accepts this and leaves. When I got off work, I was filled in on all the details and handed my note that I've worked so hard for. This place has a good name locally and they don't have a reputation for screwing people over. I followed their instructions and end up in this position? Not cool. Dad is normally pretty sharp and very business like, but he's a good ole country boy and he's a tad too trusting of businesses etc at times.

I call this morning and repeated what my dad told me and told the lady that I'll take my payment in check form if absolutely necessary, but I'd prefer cash. She replied that they only dealt in cash. Before I hung up I said "I'll be there around noon to collect my money. The accountant woman said "Ok. We'll try to have it ready for you."

TRY? She's gonna TRY to have my money waiting for me? Ain't that just great! If she's gonna TRY to have my money, I guess I'll have to TRY keeping my hands off her neck and TRY to not strangle her to death. The reason I went there is because they have a good rep, reasonable rates and paid cash. I have a little more scrap to go, but I won't be returning there if they can't get their act together. I'm nervous and very irritable to be put in this circumstance. I didn't bust my butt all those nights/weekends and load a dump truck in the rain two nights ago to get a stinking NOTE.

    I hear you, bro.

I've been gigging with a new band at this place for the last few months, prodding them to practice (to no avail), slogging the PA gear every Fri & Sat night, and generally trying to stay busy in a small town in western Kentucky.

Up until last week, the house paid cash, like every other local venue. Last Saturday night (Sunday at 1AM), after we've worked outdoors the whole night, sore backs, sore throats, soaked in sweat and covered in bug bites (their fountain breeds mosquitoes, like blondes in Mazatlan during spring break), they told us they could only give us a check.

The drummer, a formerly incarcerated individual, appointed himself band representative to collect.

Within minutes, we had the cash.

Don't back down. That receipt is written proof they owe you money. If you need to collect, get a licensed, reputable attorney or collection agency... not a PO'ed drummer!

I used to sell aluminum scrap on the side back when I delivered seamless gutter material. It was an easy $50-$100 per week extra. Good money in that stuff.

The place I used to sell my scrap to was filled with shady characters. There is no way I'd leave my material with no money in hand. I was only dealing with 100#-150# loads though.

    Good luck with that.

Good luck man. A buddy of mine is always taking in scrap (copper, aluminum, and plain old metal), and I've never heard of him having to come back to get paid.

Keep hounding them, and I bet you'll get your money, and next time, take it yourself, and don't leave w/o the cash. I'd also recommend looking for a scrap yard that doesn't need time to get the money together.

Good news. They paid me today no sweat. I didn't even have to threaten to choke any old ladies.

Here's the scoop. The old lady working the scales had no helper yesterday and it was a sudden thing. She had noone to cover her so she could go to the bank. She SHOULD have gone the day before, but she didn't know her helper was gonna call in sick.

Oh yeah. .60 per pound. Paid off my visa debt almost entirely in one swoop. Could have got .65, but I would have to take a check.

Gonna sell the CR-500 to put money back so I can build me a engineered concrete laminate house. It's got the insulation built right in and it's tough as nails. I'm gonna mold the stuff into bite size panels that will basically be all my walls etc. I'll use metal studs and maybe figure out some way to do an all metal roof structure so I'll have a basically all metal and concrete house. It will be almost maintenence free and very cheap to heat and cool plus it will be fireproof so I won't have to pay fire insurance. Arsonists will consider my place an extreme challenge. It will be smack dab in the middle of a wooded lot that's located deep in the woods out in the country. Really beautiful lot if my pop doesn't decide to cut all the timber out of it (he's tempted). If I play my cards right, I may be able to buy my uncle's wife's land (my family really wants it because it borders our land and we don't want them building anywhere near us).

No trips to Hawaii. More work for me. Got lots to do and little time to do it in. Gotta get my house in order both literally and figuratively and stop living and acting like a teenager.

I'm glad it worked out for you Scott. I'm very familiar with anxiousness and glad you don't have anymore (or at least less) of that!

Thanks for the well wishes and suggestions. That note never would have stood up in any court BTW. It was useless as can be and vague beyond belief. The old lady could have claimed that she paid me and pocketed the cash and that would have been that. I would have been screwed if she were even halfway inclined to be dishonest. My pop should have made her write out an IOU to ease the legal concerns, but they were both old country types who just believe in a handshake or one's word. If either one of them spent any real time in a city they would both get taken for everything they are worth in short order.
