    Default Phat Cat Concern

    Hey all,

I was listening to the sound clips on the SD site. The bridge Phat Cat sounds like a beautiful P-90 but the neck one doesn't really sound much like a P-90 at all, or at least not the ones I've heard. Does the neck Phat Cat have that same mid crunch and and sweet biting growl (pardon the oxymoron) that the bridge one has?? I want a phat cat in the neck of my Tele, but want all the crunchy, growling fatness that P-90s typically deliver (but in a bucker sizze, hence the Phatty).

i have always assumed that the PCs were single coils per se than P-90 inclined, especially the neck pickup. someone then told me they are P-90s by virtue of the models number- any wisdom in this?

They're alnico II loaded P90's with a metal cover, so they're a bit fatter and darker than traditional P90's, but they're still fat, biting, and singing.

Then maybe an A3 or A5 is in order when I get one.

they are made just like a p90 but with the bobbin ends trimmed to fit in a bucker cover. p90's in the neck tend to be big and round sounding and the neck cat does that, but i think a3 magnets might be a great way to tighten up the phat

I think I like the crunch and unique mid sound of the bridge more, so I'll try to get my hands on one of those. If not I can settle for a neck one. It'll be my first Duncan!!!

I have a bridge model in my SG neck and it sounds great. It is a darker sounding single and really hot. It's not really like the A5 p-90s. When I roll off the tone, it's very jazzy sounding clean. I paired mine with a Burstbucker 3 bridge and they go well together.
