Humans are self aware, animals are not, that is the difference, it's as simple as that.

It's the same reason children can get away with things adults can't, adult's should know better, kids don't. Humans should know better, animals don't.

When I can have a conversation with a dog, cat, tiger, then we can judge them.

...why try to make a point like this. Even if squirrels ran around driving Cadillacs and smoking cigars, would this be a reason to undermine animal rights?
Because animal rights groups are always undermining our rights as humans. Plain and simple. And for me the Discovery Channel has nothing to do with it.

when animals start using ulterior means of doing this killing, then i might give some thought to it.

What are we really kept from doing as a result of wanting to protect animals.

And I think if we're keeping a tally, animals STILL get effed more by humans about five times over.

    Also: compassion.

Good lord, Slade.... you should be readily aware that anything short of running through the streets shooting people is a denial of rights, and that compassion = weakness.

I kill groundhogs for fun and I don't eat them. They are pests and I will kill every groundhog I can if given an opportunity. Though some may consider it a terrible thing to do, I consider it to be great fun and helpful to those who garden or have livestock/horses.

Ergo - I kill for fun.
The very last line is why, even though we could not see eye to eye any less about hunting, you'll never hear me condemn you for hunting.

here is a story about wolves killing hunting dogs in idaho. It goves one a little insight into wolf pack behavior. I am not able to judge the "fun" aspect. It looks like they may eat domestic dogs.

These tigers were young and about as tame as tigers can be. About halfway through the show the two tigers went on a killing rampage and cut a wide swath through a herd of springbock. Killing far more springbock than they could hope to eat. It was amazing to see them at work. Hyper-efficient and well tuned hunting and killing machines. They simply gave into the bloodlust and killed everything they could get their paws on. This sort of killing has been occasionally documented with wild tigers as well, but never caught on film like this. Those tigers were having fun and that is why they killed so many springbock.
while it may seem like they are doing it for "fun", there isnt a way to prove that. it could be just their instinct telling them to kill all of those other animals for whatever reason, or maybe it was because of them being in an unfamiliar environment...

are you attempting to justify vick's behavior? (i dont mean that in some condescending way or anything, im really asking)

We can add man's best friend to the list. Dogs will take off after rabbits even if they aren't hungry. I've seen them catch and kill rabbits just to kill and play with them.

Predators do have a kill instinct that causes them to get into a frenzy when they pounce on their prey. House cats love to chase and pounce on ribbons for that reason. Once it kicks in, it takes over, and they love the excitement. That's why house cats will torture and play with mice for a long time before letting them die. They do get off on pouncing on and clawing their prey, and they'll try to prolong the thrill.

As for humans killing for fun, in the 1800's, people on trains out west in the US would shoot buffalo from the trains, never intending to get out, pick them up and eat the meat. It was target practice, and the carcasses were left on the plains to rot.

Maybe humans kill for fun precisely because we are animals. Maybe it should be our goal, not to think of ourselves as not being animals, but to recognize that we are and strive to rise above the more savage aspects of our nature.

this incident took place not far from where I live. I fly fish in that area, and ride horses in the panhandle are of idaho. makes me a little nervous. Nature is brutal and beautiful.

This is a good point. Typically, when human qualities are attributed to animals, it's mistaken. It's quite possible that the animals that appear to be hunting for fun are merely keeping their skills sharp.

At this point in time, there's really no way to tell, so neither side is really wrong.
