funny tone control story

so i was a show over the weekend....friend of friends band or something, i was like yeah ok ill check it out

anyways, the lead guitarist was actually pretty good. i was talking to him after the show, he was saying how much he loved his guitar, just that it could sound kind of biting at times. so i say, you could try rolling off the tone control a little (since i noticed he didnt touch it the whole show). he replies...why would i want less tone? like the tone knob actually controlled how good his tone was and if he turned it down it wouldnt sound as good, lol. i was just like...nevermind

who knows. the funny thing was that the guy has obviously been playing for a while because he has got some chops for real. i just dont understand how you can play for a good amount of time and not know what your tone control does.

Sounds like you took him a bit out of context :-
Easing off on the bridge tone control can sometimes just muddy or muffle the sound by cutting the guitar output frequencies too much before gain stage, losing some of its needed bite. The harshness he was putting out would be much better processed by cutting and trimming 8K frequencies and up by properly eq'ing the amp et al.
