Every experience I've had with EBAY has been great, EXCEPT WHEN BUYING GUITARS. If you want to go used, make sure you can try it before you buy it. Hell, go to craigs list and find someone near you who's selling the guitar http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=gibson.

Even if you buy new, play it first.
In 1861 as Confederate forces were about to fire on Fort Sumter, the Blue and Gray had far more in common than the blue and red today. What fellowship can "the truth shall set you free" ever have with "what is truth"? Barring a major epidemic or nuclear attack to explode the postmodern myth that the reality outside our heads depends for its very existence on what we think of it, secession is coming...

    Your in NY.
There's got to be a million music stores there.
Start hitting them and get the best deal you can.

Head on down to some of those local guitar shops in NYC and see what they have. Play a bunch and pick the one you like the best, you won't have a hard time knowing when you find the right one, you won't want to put it down.

You're also boardering on used Custom Shop R6, R7 and R8 prices. You can sometimes find those in the sub $2000 range used. I'd highly recommend playing some Custom Shop stuff new or used just to see what you think. It may be worth taking a little extra time to save up another $500 or $600 to get into a nice new Historic Les Paul.

Just be warned that once you buy one, you'll want another and another and maybe another one after that.

I'm all with innocent bystander. But used, particularly a used Historic.

Those stores on 48th Street? You're not going to bet a good deal there at all. You have Sam Ash, Mannys (which is now owned by Sam Ash- same thing), and the extremely overpriced Rudy's.

Craigs list is OK, but I haven't seen many good deals on there.

All standards have some sort of weight relieving, but exactly what kind this one has, I don't know. I have owned it about 6 months maybe, so you figure it was built about a year ago.

Where in NY are you? I know of a Goldtop RI for sale right now. Its on Long Island. In real good shape. PM me and I will give you any details I can.

But I agree with what the others are telling you. GO play it first. Avoid Ebay (Just my opinion). Go plug it into a few amps and see how it sounds as well as how it plays. Then go from there. $2000 should get you a real beauty!

Carry cash and if you find one in a store, deal, they'll come down on price if you have cash in hand.

Ayrton's is a fine example too, beautiful finish with the gold hw.

If you are into goldtops (not my thing, but hey different strokes) I would check out Bludave's. Nothing like keeping it in the family...

Good call on going in there with cash in hand. "Cash" is a magical word in music stores, and an awesome bargaining chip.

Honestly, buy what you want, and buy new. Ebay can be cool, but sometimes it's not.
