...and have you achieved that goal?
I certainly did what I could and moved on.
I found other things than the simpleton mindset shredder mentality to challenge me as a player, listener and musician.
The entire notions of shredders bringing anything to the table but speed is giving the entire genre too much credit.

oasis did a pretty good live cover of enuff z'nuff's "new thing":

Oh, I forgot one.
Little Wing: SRV's is killer, though they are almost two different songs.

No man, the only explanation as to why you don't like it is that you didn't listen to it! Everyone knows that as soon as you listen to the song, tears of joy immediately stream down your face and you thank God for giving you such a magnificent song. The only logical explanation is that you didn't listen! Are you sure you weren't listening to something else ... a dog farting perhaps?

I too like the remakes of Dylan's stuff in particular. That's because I hate his voice.

no, but Xtc's cover of All along the watchtower is fairly interesting.

oh well forgive me great friggin price. please allow me to make it clear that paul gilbert, eric johnson, yngwie malmsteen, joe satriani, steve vai, john petrucci, etc... are all simpletons who aren't refined enough as players, listeners, and musicians.
nice try, but you're too smart for your own friggin good. actually, my purpose for posting that was because anyone who has actually listened to the song would know that it's far from moore's typical shred song.

For the most part the only covers I like across the board are Bob Dylan covers, he is a master songwriter, but some of his arrangements leave something to be desired. (Live is completely different, as anyone's who's seen him will attest)
However, sometimes when a band takes a cover and makes it theirs I really like it. Something like The Rheostatics cover of Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I really hate straight covers of big songs. Like that Godsmack one of Led Zeppelin. If you're going to cover a song straight up, it better be an obscure one, and if you choose a popular one, it better bear very little resemblance to the original.

I prefer somem covers over the originals...Not Bashing the originals tho. They are great
Love Bites (or. Judas Priest)..Nevermore did it faaaaaaaar better..
The Ripper ( " " " )..King Diamond sings it much better
Got the Time (Joe Jackson)..Anthrax gave it a whole new dimension

Killswitch Engage - Holy Diver
(cheesy as hell video though)
Depends who did the remake. The majority of Metallica's remakes to me are better than the real thing. Am I Evil?, Helpless, Blitzkrieg, The Prince, Stone Cold Crazy and so on. Some miss the mark completely and do little to further my appreciation. 53rd And 3rd, Commando, Overkill, and other assorted atrocities. Some are a draw, Last Caress/Green Hell, Die Die My Darling and Tuesday's Gone.
In the realm of other bands I much prefer In Flames cover of Land Of Confusion over ******chilles... I mean Disturbed. But I don't necessarily prefer the original even though it was my first exposure to it. Primus does a raging cover of The Thing That Should Not Be that is just as good as Metallica's original.
Then again there are any number of Anthrax covers that I neither like the originals or the covers. That is not quite the case with Metallica or Megadeth or any other bands. I just don't like what Anthrax does with their covers.
I think it really depends on the band and what they did with it. Did they just do a remake? Did they make it their own?
It's hard to say in the end but I have no allegiance to originals or covers. The first thing I did when I realize the entirety of Garage Days Re-Revisited wasn't Metallica's own creation I sought out the originals. I was very disappointed with all but the Misfits tunes.

I preferred SRV's Voodoo Chile over Jimi's version.
