I have not used the Blue, red, silver 3 packs, but I play a Clapton Strat that has its original lace sensors and this guitar sounds great in all positions. The New ones with the "Fender noiseless" pickups IMHO sound very sterile by comparison.

i think even the new gold lace pups arent the same as the old gold lace pups and im not talking about old gold vs new hot gold, i mean the current lace sensor gold isnt the same as the old lace sensor gold.

as jeremy was saying, im pretty sure the fender lace sensors which were in the clapton strat are not exactly the same as the new lace sensors.
that being said, i have a set of the newer hot golds and they are really nice. i have never tried the blue or the silver but personally i think the red is just way too hot and compressed and sounds very artificial.

I really dug the red/silver/blue set myself!
I thought the notches were decent.

I really like mine, I have a neck on switch and with all three on it sounds really acousticish. They have a lot of versatility, and the notch positions really help with that. The red is quite a bit hotter than the other two, and I am thinking about replacing it with a custom custom. I cant comment on how they sound compared to other singles, since I swapped out for them pretty much instantly. I rather enjoy the hum canceling part of them, but if you really want a true single coil sound, from what I understand they don't really have that tone. You really have to try them.
Guitars:
LTD EC400AT (Custom 8/Jazz n)
Fender MIM Strat (JB/Stock Neck)
Amps:
Mesa F30 (Master Volume Effects Loop)
played them and didn't like them as a whole. The red's aren't bad if you wanted a hot pickup though I'd go a different route in that case as well with a lil 59 or something. The blue and silvers seemed rather bland and lacking character.
Personally I'm of the bias that strat pickups should be hand wound, stagged, lower output Alnico 5 's. Nothing else need apply
-Burny Randy Rhoads LP Custom- C5/59 Hybrid Bridge/Fernades Vh-1 PAF neck
-Epi Goldtop - Custom Shop Mike Ness p90's
-Epi Masterbilt AJ500R rosewood
-Fender Classic Player 60's strat CS 69'
-Gretsch Black Phoenix - TV Jones Classics
-Danelectro Dano Pro Baritone

They were stock in my Deluxe Plus. I thought they were sterile and bland. Since I got it, it's had APS-1's, original Virtual Vintages, SSL-1's and a Rio Grande Stelly in various combos, and all the them sounded way better to me. Even the VV's had a more organic character to them.
However, quite a few notable artists have gotten decent tones out of them. Maybe you're a Lace guy?
