Hmmmm...regular Guiness goes down with all the authority of hose-water, IMO. The Extra Stout is where it's at. More alcohol, better mouth-feel (God, that's one for theodie!! Doh!) and it's carbonated instead of nitrogenated...Arthur Guiness probably didn't even know what nitrogen was, so even if that's what gets served in Ireland, the Extra is still better, IMO.

I can't pick an all-time favorite, there's too many I like and what I like one week I'll be bored with the next.

Lately, I've been enjoying Unibroue's line of beers. Got a few bottles of Maudite outside, delicious.

Heineken is my #1 beer. If that's not available, I'll usually go for a St. Pauli Girl.

Try this Jake, you'll love it:

Trois Pistoles, Unibroue's finest beer IMO. It's really good, check some reviews.

    +100 to that.

    ------

This might be of interest to the younger guys here. It is true, many geezers like myself turn into our American fathers, and grandfathers at times. You know this idea that a twelve pack is twelve pack (hell, I remember the days twelve packs were first introduced!).

Anyhow, the thrust of this is that much of the taste in the American beer drinker's palette today, are not just the brands available...but the DISTRIBUTION! A beer like Heineken for instance was far "skunkier" in the early 1980's, than it is today. A typical Heineken from the 1980's tasted like a Heineken today, but set in the sun for a solid week before un-capping!

This personal experience also goes for Pilsner Urquell, St, Pauli, Moosehead, Guiness Extra Stout, and practically ALL others. Beer is fresher today, than it has ever been!!!

I also like many beers from South of the US border. Tecate (Mexican border town) from the bottle is very good. The canned variety is swill, but Mexicans I know say that the canned variety is far better there than here. Dos Equis (XX) are very good in the green or brown bottle varieties. My favorite is Modelo "Especial" in the bottle, with the canned variety tasting better than most bottled beer. Modelo "Negre" is practically a meal all by itself.

Another good beer is Quilmez from Argentina, but I can't find it now. It should be noted that many Germans have been instrumental in the creation of Central and South American breweries.

    -------
Right now, it's Bud from a tall can!

Thanks for the recommendation! I saw that right next to Maudite at the speciality beer store here, next time I go I'll grab that.

I saw an empty can of this in the basement of the house my buddy bought. Given the neighborhood and folks that lived there before him I figured it was the Mexican version of Milwaukee's Best.

Guinness and Fort Garry Dark Ale. I've still got to try the Guinness Extra Stout though. If I'm in the mood for something lighter I'll have Heineken.

Just give me an icecold, heavy, unfiltered Heffeweizen and I'm happy.

That's what stocks my fridge here in Manila. Of course, it does only cost 50 cents a bottle here...they also have a dark that I have a few bottles of. It's nothing too amazing, but certainly nice for the price.
