Question Question About MIJ Fender Neck

I recently played a MIJ Fender bearing the following serial number: Q069820. Based on information taken directly from the Fender website (here), I found the guitar was manufactured circa 1993-94.

The neck and fingerboard on that guitar are maple, and the neck felt very good in my hands. How do I find out the specifications on that particular neck. I played it at a music store, so I don't feel comfortable bringing in radius gauges, tiny rulers and the like, just so I can measure a guitar I'm not planning on buying. However, I'd like to know this information, along with things like fret wire and neck finish, so that I can get one on my own without having to buy the whole guitar. You follow?

was it a strat neck? if we can determine the model it's off from it's construction we're halfway there!

    1) truss rod.. headstock or butt adjustment?
    2) fender logo.. typeface?
    3) skunk stripe?
    4) string retainer.. disc or tree?

number 4) is surprisingly important.. mine's a '57 reissue (tree) instead of a '54.. quickest way to tell the difference!

what you're describing sounds like my '57RI though - sweet light tint, thin lacquer, spaghetti logo, butt TR adjustment, skunk stripe.

    this any use?

Keith. I have had excellent luck by calling Fender w/serial Number, they will provide all that info. Wood type, neck etc.

just be shameless and measure it. life's to short to be like that. Or, if you like being more discrete, become friends with the people in the store

I hope this picture helps, but I'll be going to the store today to pick up an amp. I can get more information when I'm there.

    The pickups are not stock.

Dave, thanks for the suggestion about calling Fender directly. I think I'll give them a call right now.

That is a MIJ Fender reissue 57 Strat, it has a one piece fretted maple neck with a 7.25 inch radius, vintage fret wire (21 frets) and a semi fat profile, not a log but not a thin 60's profile either. This is all assuming it has the stock neck...

It's $1,000. I can't afford that. Plus, I've got a Strat I already dig, but I like the neck on this MIJ a lot.

Will the maple neck on this MIJ Strat fit my '01 MIM Standard Strat?

Actually, I wouldn't count on it. MIJ parts are built using metric measurements. The neck will probably fit in the pocket, but the screw holes may not line up perfectly. MIM and MIA Fender parts are interchangeable, but that's not usually 100% true with MIJ parts.

I know that when you order necks, bodies, and pickguards from Warmoth, they warn you that they may not be a perfect fit for a MIJ Fender. I experienced this first hand when I put one of their pickguards on my MIJ Tele. None of the screw holes lined up.

Bottom line: you'll probably do fine, but it won't be a straightforward swap.

You might have an issue with a guardplate swap form a MIM, MIA, MIJ, CIJ, MIK, etc to another however I personally have NEVER had an issue changing a Fender neck from one body to another. Im not gonna say that it would NEVER be an issue but I have never had that problem wiht a neck...

Hmm ... maybe I'm just being a pessimist. It stands to reason though that if the measurements are off on the pickguard, they might be off for other things as well.

Keith, maybe you can check out the neck on my recent CIJ 54 Strat RI. They might be similar.

The guard plates are "off" because different plants in America, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, whatever uswed different (slightly) templates for the size, shape and pattern. However the necks are right on in my experience...
