His copy of Randy's original Jackson had a Jazz/Distortion, too. He still sounds the same when playing those guitars. Either of those should get you in the ballpark. Like other's have said, I think your amp's the big ticket.

He would usually play the first couple of songs with the polka dot V's, which as a photographer was always worrisome because we only get to shoot the first thing songs, and you'd obviously want to get a shot of him with the bulleye LP because thats the most iconic shot. Luckily for the 3rd song of his set everytime I saw him he'd switch back to the LP.

Still does sound like himself playing the V's, just as Jimi still sounded like Jimi on a V.

Thats one of the things that really seperates a great player from the rest. Its because their style and sound is in their hands more than their gear. If you can sound like yourself on any halfway decent guitar then you've really got something special.

    Hey Everyone

I agree with most or all your points. I was only using Zakk more as a reference point, as to getting a more aggressive sound out of an LP. I already have one heritage 150 with 59's in it, and I like it alot. However, I also play some fairly noisy, chainsaw metal from the 80's as well. And I would like another LP with more aggressive pups to achieve that. And it seems like most of the guitar players of that era didn't play LP's. But that's OK for me-I just want to get close, and I'm in that search for pups that will help me.

    SD-1, a JMP or a JCM800, and EMG's.. analogue chorus and a crybaby

add his picking technique and pinches, and i should think you're on your way!

The Custom should be good then. Don't forget to check out the Distortion and JB too, when I had a JB in my Paul it screamed 80's to me. If you like the Zakk chug, the Custom might be the best.

Well, I've no experience with a Custom, but I know for a fact a Distortion will definatley get you a more aggresive tone. One of my favorite high output pickups.
