Default What can you tell me about Oscar Schmidt?

You know me . . . always on the look-out for another cheap guitar.

I don't recall ever seeing much of this brand name before. All of a sudden it seems to be popping up all over the place. MF has some nice looking semi-hollow bodies on sale for $150. Are these just another "name" slapped on an Indonesian sweat-house product?

Anybody ever played one? Inquireing minds, (er . . . cheapskates), want to know.

i owned one for about 3 days...i bought it thinking it would dish out some fat tones because of the hollow body. My Ibanez Gax 70 performed way better, and it costed me about the same. For some reason i can't really seem to tolerate the bass of hollow bodies, too much like acoustic, but the Washburn oscar schmidt is an ok guitar. Doesn't stay tuned too well though, eventhough it comes with grovers...probably the cheapest crap grovers ever. I dont know how to rewire a hollow body so i didnt want to deal with the os-30

If I'm not mistaken Oscar Schmidt is Washburn's lower end lineup, kinda like Fender and Squire.

Yeah, I see now that it is. Its just funny that this thing lists for around $450, but MF has it on sale for $150. Thats a heck of a price drop.

I wonder if its any good?

Well . . . it depends on whether or not I'm wearing my rose-colored glasses.

I bought one of these on impulse, and I must say that it's a well-crafted guitar, looks great, and is easy to play. Played through a non-transparent amp, it has a very warm tone. The neck pickup's tone is thick and fat, and the bridge is quite brittle. If you're using an amp that is too transparent, you will want to replace the pickups. I can't emphasize how easy to play I found this to be, though, and for $150, it's a steal.

Sounds like a prime candidate for a SH-55 set of a pair of APH's.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

Thanks for the review Saggy. The basic workmanship and playability is what
I was interested in. If I get one, it'll get "Duncanized" immediately.

Nice... I think I'm going to pop in the time-tested JB/Jazz combo.
