I just bought a hot rails strat pickup for my guitar. I bought the one calibrated for bridge position but i wanted to install it in my neck position. Is it going to make a difference? The guy in the guitar store said it doesn't make a difference.

it shouldn't be a huge issue, provided your bridge pickup is more powerful. I used a HotRails for Tele in the neck of my Tele at one time with a Gibson Dirty Fingers in the bridge. It balanced alright.

you didnt mention the type of guitar, but .... . .
the hot rails is a beast. i shudder to think what a bridge hot rails would to in the neck.
this is just me talking (25+ years playing guitar and worked in music stores) , but if you post that question here i think the guy in the store did you a disservice. if it "doesnt make a difference" seymour wouldnt sell bridge and neck models.
i'm sure some ppl have used the hot rails bridge in the neck, but for very specific applications and it wasnt an accident (meaning they knew what they where getting into).
GENERALLY SPEAKING :: bridge pickups are wound hotter because the strings vibrate less at the bridge. whereas the strings vibrate more over the neck position. you get a more balanced sound that way.

Also, if you look at the specifications for the hot rails bridge vs. neck... 10.8k vs. 16.9k, if they use the same size wire, then you're going to have one hell of a hot neck pickup in there. But who knows, try it before you decide one way or the other. You may end up liking it. But you're going to be hard pressed finding a bridge pickup to balance with it.

heck yeah it makes a difference.
