Default Tuners for my LP Classic?

The button on one of the tuners of my 2000 LP Classic has a little "slack" in it if I can express it that way, meaning that it turns a little before it actually starts turning the gears. It's not a big deal but it still bugs me and, instead of just fixing it, I thought that it may be a good idea to change the tuners to something better while I'm at it...

I love the sperzels on my LTD, they feel solid. However, I do know that they won't fit the holes of my LP.

I definitely want retrofits, I don't want to have to ream the holes or anything at all if possible.

I've been looking a bit and kluson do make newer versions of their tuners (even locking ones) but I'm afraid I'd just be buying the same thing I already have there.

Does anybody have recommendations for good retro-fit tuners for a Classic?

    Thanks for the help fellas.

Perhaps some Grovers would fit? Do you want the classic look or metallic knobs?

I did notice that Grover has some Kluson type tuners when I was looking through tuners at Stewmac a month or two ago. I've never tried them though.

That wasn't too hard to find: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/G...Keystones.html

That'd look right on a Gibson.

I'm not sure who makes Gibson's Klusons. It might actually be Grover. The Klusons on my Les Paul Junior/Special still work really well. I like them a lot, whoever makes them.

I believe it's Grover, and that's kinda why I suggested them. Those should come with metallic knobs also, I believe.

    Thanks guys,

I already found those, I was wondering if other options were available...

I don't really care about the plastic look, could be metal as long as it's not too "off" looking.

Slack in the tuner!!! I suggest you just sell it back to me at a reduced price and I'll fix it!!!

I'd personally throw a set of grovers on it and be done with it. I think I have a set of chrome ones around here somewhere that I bought for that axe.

Just get the regular Grovers. Klusons blow chunks. Hatem.

Gibson versions of the Klusons are generally made by 2 companies, Schaller and Gotoh.

As much as I like Schaller their version sucks and they eventually all do exactly what yours are doing Surgeon. The Gotoh's are far better tuners and don't come apart, you should be able to find those pretty easily I would think. The Gibby replacements that they sell carded in the store are the Schallers so be careful. I think I saw All Parts has the Gotoh versions.

My LP Classic tuners can be spun with 2 fingers when unstrung. Really loose. Once I put strings on with the locking method, they work great. No tuning probs whatsoever. If the tuning delay bothers you, I'd buy 1 single Kluson from StewMac. I think they sell singles. Keep it stock. Klusons are now made by TonePros. I don't think anyone has a problem with that company. F*** Grovers, they'll ruin the guitars value.

Well how do you expect that the Grovers ruin the value moreso than some Klusons?

I have two EPI's I put sperzels one. I had to enlarge the holes on one of them very slightly. If they were Gibby's I would not have tacked it myself but no big deal on EPI's. There one additional complication which probably would not happen with a Gibson. The existing grovers were installed such that I had to drill a new hole for the Sperzels and leave the file the old holes in order to not have to install the Sperzels backwards.

I replaced my Grovers with Sperzels. If anyone is interested in buying the Grovers I removed let me know. I have two sets and they were not on either guitar for very long.

Sorry brother but that one's a keeper...

So, now you guys got me all mixed-up... may I request again what brand would be retro-fit for that guitar? I really don't want to have to drill or ream anything and keep the stock tuners for later. That guitar may not be collection-material but still.

From what I understand grovers seem to be the way to go? I wish I new the hole size... anybody got that info somewhere handy?

    Thanks again guys

    Hey Phil,

Do you have the Kluson-styled Grovers or just rotomatic grovers?

If you put Grover Rotomatics in it, you'll have to bore the tuner hole out, and put a different screw hole in it.

Does'nt gotoh make a locking well built Kluson retro-fit at half the price of the tone-pros retro-fit that locks?

Grovers are nice, but they add weight to the headstock and ruin some of your guitars balance. They also make you reem holes and drill new ones. I'd say a modern rethink on a Kluson style not only is less work but it looks and feels better.

If you are the original owner of the guitar, take it to a Gibson Authorized Service Center and see if they will replace the tuners under warranty.

Did anyone try the Kluson or Gotoh locking tuners on their Les Pauls? They look exactly like the stock Gibson ones so should be a direct fit, ya know, the funky green keystone tuners...

I went with the Schallers on my LP because I didn't need to make any changes to the headstock. But they aren't the best. I've has trouble with the backs popping off them and shooting across the room.
