Something A2, my favorite , the 78 or maybe a Pearly Gates. A Patb-1 would fatten her up too.

Yep so far the three contenders would be:
TB1 (59)
Pearly Gates (if available tremspaced)
APH1 (tremspaced too)
EVH is not an option, too expensive, PATB are too hard to find and the description says even more mids than the PATB3... :|
The Cheesebucker
It has the.....erm yellow holes sound![]()
Not gonna miss you know!
Information is not knowledge.

TBAPH1's first on the list!

Isnt that strat (B)asswood? Then throw anything in there itll prety much sound the same, warm, fuzzy , blurred and buzzy.
But a great choice forbasswood is the Screamin Deamon IMO.

Alder. And Basswood, a GOOD piece, is a great tonewood. Well balanced sounding, well adpated to high gain, and hell I even love that basswood Charvel for Blues.
Uh, a good piece sounds good. Think Showmaster price range and up (i.e. $600-ish and up). I liked my Showmaster's sound, definitely. The '59 and PG+ were good pickups for it.
Yeah, I agree. To my ears, alder sounds balanced, ash sounds like it has a slight mids scoop, and basswood seems to reduce the highs and lows while adding mids (seemed to almost have more mids than my friend's Les Paul). Mahogany to me seems to compress some of the mids, mainly in the middle and high area of the mids, but otherwise seems to be very balanced to my ears.
Anyways, yeah, if you're sick of basswood due to very low priced guitars, it's not basswood's fault, it's the fact that the guitars are cheap. Price on guitars usually (though not always) seems to me to be based on the quality of wood. Even a standard stratocaster to me had nothing acoustically on a Lite Ash Strat (whether this is the slightly thicker neck or the thicker body, or the quality of the ash in the Lite Ash, I'm not sure).
Don't know if it's just in my head, but around $500 and up, guitars seem to be made of better woods. Around $600 it seems they get good woods. Again, might be my brain, might be my ears.

Don't write off the VHPAF if you want to tame a bright bridge. My alder strat didn't like any pup in that position except the the VHPAF. Just look at the EQ curve and you won't find any pup that does what it does. Put a A2 in it and you are close to the '78, but probably not as bright (which may be a good thing). Only problem is they are being discontinued.

I've tried the DiMarzio Air Classic in several guitars (one of them an alder Kramer Focus), and loved it every time.

Ah the hell... adding the VHPAF to the list.
And I'm even considering a Custom5.. :| Any words on it in a Strat?

Forget the PG, because it has uppermids. 59 is kinda flat but if the Jazz-b did not work, there is quite a high probability that 59b too wouldn't.
Given all this, I'd say go with the A2P-B. It has flat eq, and its highs are round.
BTW you are saying no to almost everything. You aware of that?
Peace,
B

I amsorry guys hehe but... I just really do NOT like honk/midspike. It can kill an otherwise great pickup for me.
