They have really good pickups, but keep in mind that they are in a very, very good guitar. G&L legacys are the best strats out there, IMO. But yeah, great pups.
The "Z" pups they have in the Commanche are amazing.

The MFD's are amazing pickups....

I love the bridge pup in my ASAT CLassic. There is a Seth Lover in the neck. It smokes too.

G&L's, MFD pickups are my favorite. The Legacy pickups are not the MFD design. The Legacy, and it's pickups are a creation of G&L's current owner BBE Sound. Leo wouldn't have made the Legacy.
The white guitar is a '90 G&L, Comanche V. The Honeyburst one is an '07 G&L, Comanche Studio VI.

G&L is one of my favorite guitar makers; and it is about the only company that--when I see that someone has replaced the stock pickups with aftermarket pickups--I treat it as a DOWN-grade. I have 15 G&Ls--here's a rundown on how they sound.
Z-Coils use the Magnetic Field Design (MFD) that Leo Fender patented. They are humbucking; constructed like a P-bass pickup. They are a very high output pickup; but they have a sound closer to a single coil. They are very bright, articulate, clear sounding pickups. They have a wide-range, high fidelity type of sound--lots of tight bottom, lots of top end. You can really dial back the TREBLE and PRESENCE on your amp, and have a thick, fat tone that will still have single coil clarity. They really cut through the mix.
The S-500 has a single coil version of the MFD. Like the Z-Coils, these MFDs have adjustable pole pieces; and the same type of wide-range, high-fidelity sound. Again, VERY high output--the S-500 sounds more aggressive than the Z-Coils to me--great for Hard Rock and Texas Blues. This is the guitar that DEFINES the phrase, "A Strat on Steroids!"
Neither the Z-Coils or the MFDs sound like a vintage single coil--that's the Legacy's territory.
If you want a G&L with humbucker tone, try the Legacy HB (H-S-S) or the Legacy 2HB. Invader models also have humbuckers (and can be ordered with a Floyd Rose). Want vintage? Think Legacy. Want a guitar for Fusion or Metal? Try the Invader.
G&L also offers the Legacy Special model, fitted with dual bladed humbucking pickups made by Gotoh of Japan. These resemble Joe Barden pickups--in appearance only. They have a thicker, more PAF-ish tone--yet with the clarity you'd expect from a narrow, Strat-sized pickup.
Another advantage to the G&L design is Leo Fender's Passive Treble and Bass tone controls (PTB). PTB gives you the ability to make meaningful, yet subtle, shadings to your tone from your guitar. And best of all, the controls work globally--on all pickups--in all switch positions.
The Comanche's Z-Coils and the S-500's MFD pickups are tremendous pickups. For some, they are an acquired taste. With their wide-range tonality and high ouput, they will demand that you use very high quality tubes in your amplifier. If you use a tube that is microphonic, harsh sounding, or otherwise not up to snuff--you WILL hear it. Don't blame the pickup!
Remember, Z-Coils and MFDs don't sound like vintage Strat pickups. After all, the S-500 and the Comanche aren't yer daddy's Strat! These are modern guitars with updated hardware; and modifications that Leo Fender wanted to make to his original designs, for the modern player. The Comanche and the S-500 DO offer you one very important thing, and that is the ability to create and sculpt YOUR SIGNATURE TONE with these powerful tools.
Great guitars, great pickups--and all from the genius of Leo Fender.

I have an SC3 like this one. Cool guitar but I didn't like the pickups. Weak. I replaced them with some Joe Bardens although I kept the old pickups and harness intact and stored it away.

The guitar i was referring to i actually put on layaway.
Here is what it looks like....

Can you feel all the G&L love?![]()
The Comanche's Z-coils are very balanced and very clear - I've heard some people call them sterile, but I've never liked those people.
I had an S-500 custom made a little over a year ago, and man those MFDs... so clear and versatile. You get a nice amount of power, but if you dial back the Bass (PTB system) and the Volume, you're in vintage strat tone-land.
Leo was a genius.
