Lightbulb Making Use of the SDUGF Faves List

NOTE: I've updated one of the rules slightly. Check here, even if you've given your two-song selection.

I have an idea I'd like to throw out there to all those who participated in the SDUGF Favorite Guitarists list. Since we unofficially take this as our list of the 75 most personally inspiring guitarists, why not put together a collection of songs that best represent these guitarists? A catalog of required listening, if you will.

The reason I suggest this is because there are at least a handful of guitarists on the list with whom I am mostly or completely unfamiliar. I wouldn't know where to start with Dann Huff or Alex Skolnick. Others may not know where to start with Richie Sambora or B.B. King.

Here's how I'd like to start it, just so things don't get way out of hand in a real hurry:
    • If one of the guitarists from your submitted top five list made the Top 75, pick that guitarist and offer two -- and I mean two, not one or fifty -- songs that you feel would be a great jumping off point for the uninitiated listener.
    • Once you've offered up two tunes for a given guitarist, that's it for that guitarist, and that's it for you. It's on a first come, first served basis. Nobody can choose songs for that guitarist, and you can't offer songs for any more guitarists. Do not select songs from more than one guitarist!!!
    • The songs you choose don't have to be the most popular or obvious choices, although they can be. Choose two tunes that exemplify the very reason you put that guitarist in your top five list in the first place.
    • When naming a song, let us know who the artist is (if the guitarist is performing it with a band, rather than solo), as well as the name of the album on which it appears.
    • Add a little description for each song -- what you like about it, why you chose it, what it reminds you of…anything!
    • If none of your top five guitarists made the Top 75 list, you're outta luck for offering up songs, but think of all the other music you can be listening to!
You can find the Top 75 list here.

When all's said and done, we should have a nice list of 150 tunes we can hunt down at our leisure and listen to, knowing that our fellow forum members really connect with this compilation.

Since this is my idea and I tallied up the original list, I'll start.

I'm choosing #8 - Tony Iommi, since he was #4 on my top five list.

    Song 1:
    "Planet Caravan"
From the 1971 Black Sabbath album Paranoid
This tune shows an expectedly brooding yet decidedly jazzy side to Iommi's playing. His tone is clean -- not the heavy stuff you'd expect -- and each note, slide and double-stop is just perfect. A poignant and thoroughly gloomy performance. I could listen to that tune for an hour straight. Beautiful shivers!

    Song 2:
    "Black Sabbath"
From the 1970 Black Sabbath album Black Sabbath
This is classic Iommi and classic Sabbath. There's the slow, ominous power opening, plus an up-tempo galloping section that shows off his inimitable soloing style. This tune will help you decide whether you are or are not a true Sabbath fanatic.

That's it. Nobody else can choose songs for Tony Iommi, and I can't choose songs for anyone else.

    Next…

    - Keith

    Setzer:

Sleepwalk: One of his most (if not the most) famous songs, one of three Grammy's, and the only song on my iTunes I could put on continuous rotation and be happy. The original by Santo and Jonny is (in my opinion) the prettiest slide guitar/guitar compositions of all time, and his rendition keeps the spirit of the original while improving. A masterful piece, in my opinion.

Guitar Rag: I could have put any one of his dozens of more popular songs here, but A) they're all well known (like Rock this Town or Stray Cat Strut, etc.), and B) I couldn't decide which one to put. So watch this video, because this man can basically shred.

My bad! I was running out of the house and banged that post out in about 2 minutes.

Sleepwalk is on "The Dirty Boogie," released in 1998 on Interscope records. Track 5 I believe.

Guitar Rag isn't on an album, but is on the DVD "Brian Setzer Orchestra 'Live In Japan.'" He plays it live as a warmup to Sleepwalk, generally.

I would suggest that Randy did a better job of Children of the Grave than Tony could of any tune he wrote, but wouldn't an actual Randy tune be better to include?

If you see my perspective, I would suggest the studio version of "Mr. Crowley" as a far better example of Randy's huge talent.

Trev... I know how you feel.

To me, Randy's take on Children of the Grave demonstrates his talent by taking a classic Sabbath song and turning it into a different type of beast.

Knowing that you're one of the biggest Randy fans on the board, I'll defer the decision on the second song to you. I would, however, really think about leaving it as is - the solo he played on that particular live track has gotta be one of the best heavy metal solos of all time. Momentum in movement and grace that is unmatched to any of his other works.

Randy's Solo on Children is very nothing short of brilliant. I can't actually imagine a better solo for it. I love playing his version of the song and think he took it further than Tony was capable of. So I'll retract my suggestion to change it.

I was hoping to be the one to help people find Randy's brilliance through Mr. Crowley and S.A.T.O. but you beat me too it!

So there are my contributions regarding the guy who should have been on the top of the list.

    #51 Mikael Akerfeldt

Both of these are with Opeth

Windowpane (live) - The Roundhouse Tapes
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yexj8nVaeWk
This tune really shows off Mikael's melodic side, and gives ya a taste of his phrasing. I like this version even more than the original studio recording on ****ation.

When - My Arms, Your Hearse
Killer riffing, no real guitar solos for Mikael, but some really beautiful clean stuff, and some great lead work towards the end there as well.

    #11 Mr. Vai

Bad Horsie (Alien Love Secrets)...It shows the power ,rawness and humour side of Vai...Bottleneck on a Drop-C tuned Jem...Cool song and sound

For the love of god (Passion and Warfare)..This shows more melodic ,emotional and creative side of Vai..,His Vibrato ,his 7 string Universes tone are extremely "signature" qualities of Vai ,and the "theme" of the song shows deep understanding of music theory and practice...The best song to "catch" Vai!!!

#65 Jake E Lee (who should be MUCH higher i should note!) was my #1 choice...why....well, that's easy he's just an amazing all around player but picking two songs is tricky. everyone knows how great what i guess would be his most well known track bark at the moon is so i won't pick that and give you something else to listen too.

    Song 1:
Badlands - Whiskey Dusk, from the Voodoo Highway album
(if you can listen to this song and not inspired as a guitarist you need to pick another instrument!!)

    Song 2:
Ozzy - Thank God For the Bomb, from the Ultimate Sin album
(i never get tired of this song with the little flair Jake throws in in just the right places and that real cool harmonic to tap harmonic bend hehind the nut crazy thing he does near the end never gets old!)

When naming a song, let us know who the artist is (if the guitarist is performing it with a band, rather than solo), as well as the name of the album on which it appears.
Come on guys, Keith's done a ton of work already - this is the least we could do.
