Lightbulb Need some help about choosing a pickup

    Hello guys,

I'm a french boy and I'll try to do my best with writting in english.

Well, I have a Made in Japan Fender Telecaster, and I play music called "Ska rock", for example there's an american reference like the band "reel big fish".
As a result, i need a good clean sound which has a good "skank" (like when you play ska style or reggae style), and also a good distorsion.

With the original pickup (US fender pickup), i had quite a good clean sound but the distorsion sound was really dirty, not precise. Then, i didn't have a real good rock sound.

I bought then the Little 59 for telecaster. Distorsion is great ! It sound's really good and powerfull, but the clean sound seem's to be very hushed-up, no treble, only thumping basses. I howewer have not a bad sound when i splitt the pickup.

then, It doesn't fulfill me because of that.

Finally i wanted to have the help from spécialists about the pickup which would be the best for me, such as : very good sound in clean while doing "ska style, and reggae style"...and also very good distorsion definition (in order to have a good rock sound), without needing to split the pikup..

in advance thankyou very much for your help and sorry if the english is bad !

I assueme you're talking about the bridge pickup.
What kind of cleans do you want? More treble? More warmth?

Not yet, but I'm sure it'll come, this is a great forum, trust me.

I think maybe the problem is, most people here don't play the kind of music you do, so it's hard to give a recommendation.

    BUMP!!!!!

I PLAY SKA! I PLAY REEL BIG FISH STUFF!!!!!!
try paf-ish pickup for the bridge, that's what the lead guitarist from reel big fish uses. actually, he mostly plays les paul style guitars, and from the sound of it they are very likely alnico5-equipped. the other guy with the tele custom just has stock pickups, which are a widerange and whatever the re-issue is in that model(72). as for their earlier sound, they used ibanez shred style guitar with high output pickups and hsh configs. that's why their earlier recordings have more of a "cutting" sound reguarding cleans. btw does your telecaster have humbucker routing or standard routing? if it's standard routing, try a tele-sized low output humbucker. since it's a humbucker, it'll handle distorted tones much better than stock, getting you closer to a ska-rock type distortion, yet still have decent enough cleans for the ska-stroke type rhythm. so for the bridge(if it's hum-sized) i'd say go for a 59 or pearly gates. if it's tele-sized, go for a little '59. i'd also reccomend a set of phat cat 90s as they have excellent cleans and dirtys for ska. they're fat with a bit of chime to them, perfect for ska!

fwiw i currently use a jb in the bridge of my sg and split it with the tone halfway down, and it gets a nice ska rhythm sound for stuff ranging from rbf, aquabats,

also, if i remember correctly, the phat cat was developed for hamer, but was later released as a production pickup. hamer developed a guitar with the phatcats for the guitarist from mighty mighty bosstones. i'm probably wrong, but i remember reading something like that somewhere. the guy from no doubt also used the phat cat at some point.

I don't have any hands-on experience with it, but from what I know about the mod, maybe try a spin-a-split on the lil 59?

Hopefully someone who knows more can chime in with more info about it and the tone it produces.
