If I were going for versatility, I would probably pick the '59 for the neck position. A Custom/'59 combination can cover tons of ground.

Yes, you can put a JB in the neck. Yeah it's recommended for bridge pos, but people have used it in the neck pos with good results. I had a guitar with a JB at the neck (the neck humbucker was slanted though so under the high strings it was closer to the bridge) and it sounded fine. I did however replace it with a 59 and it sounded better. But the JB had a little more ouput and was tight enough, even in the neck spot. The 59 just has a little sweeter tone and more character.

So are most of your new band's songs medium to hard rock to metal? I think you'll be fine then. If they do any blues or blues/rock (Stevie Ray? Kenny WaynE?) then the Explorer may be the wrong guitar altogether. Of course you're only playing rhythm so I assume the band has another guitarist and maybe he can cover that base.

And a big congrats on your new gig!! Big cover band, good money... it's a gig many of us wish we had. A lot of us start up cover bands hoping to get there and never do. Well done! Be confident, focus on learning the tunes and playing tight& in the groove and you'll do fine.

You can use a JB in the neck, but it's more of something you would want if you were playing hard rock or heavy metal solos (not great for clean rhythm, IMO). If you need to be dead on with your pickups and need to cover classic rock and lighter music, a '59 is probably the most fitting pickup choice for the neck position on your guitar.

For pickups bought from an authorized Seymour Duncan dealer in the USA, during the first three weeks after your purchase, if you’re not 100% satisfied with the sound of your pickup, you can exchange it through our 21 Day "Real World" Exchange Policy.

well 'm just playing rhythem only. i'm backing a great female lead player. i ordered the jb when i was little drunk, it was a toss up between the 2 but i had to have that jb. i hope it works. i know the custom is awsome in the bridge, i may just use the jb for a while then replace it with a 59. and base my ltd around the jb for more distorted songs.
and thanks for the support i'm gonna need it.
