Get the Ps3. You share alot of the same taste in games that I do and trust me, the PS3 with suit you more in the long run.

The above post stating that a majority of the 360 online crowd is all unruly young people is very skewed. I've played countless COD4 online matches. Most of the people have been extremely cool.

+1
Halo is a terrible multiplayer community. Heck, in Halo even I'm a huge trash-talking prick, especially when my friends and I get loaded while playing. It's been ages since I've played Gears live so I can't really recall the experience there.
I've been playing a lot of Team Fortress 2 and I love it. The community playing it is pretty cool. The little bit of CoD4 I played, people were pretty cool there as well.
But I'm also pushing TF2 a lot on all my friends because I think it is a superior multiplayer shooter...but they all love "Slayer" matches whereas I enjoy objectives.
I agree, both are good systems that have their advantages and disadvantages. I have only played Xbox live once so I don't have that much experience with it, but I find nothing wrong with the PS3 online. Personally I can't stand the design of the Xbox controller and I just like the PS3 better. I have one of the first series of PS3's, a 60gig and have had no troube with it. I even accidently left it on for 3 days and it works perfect, no overheating issues or locking up.

Oh.
I see.
OK!
This is starting to become more clear... I haven't made up my mind yet... Honestly the biggest thing right now is games. I was leaning toward the 360 because it's library of titles is a lot larger. Keep in mind that I don't hate multiplayer, I just wouldn't use that as a determining factor in what system I buy. As such it's not a turn-off, per se.
But, with the games I listed in my last post, you guys still think the PS3 is more suited to what I want to get out of a next-gen console?
Don't listen to these rubes. Xbox is where it's at.
I NEVER play multiplayer and hate my PS3.
Xbox is where it's at. Xbox has more and better games, more exclusives, is cheaper, larger hard drive, and the controller is much better.
Plus it has Bioshock!

Aaaarggh
Happy to help.
Listen if you're looking for/wanting a hi-def player as well, PS3 is a good bet. Check to see if the games you're looking at are available for both.
That said Xbox does have MORE exclusives and better online play. One of the largest complaints against PS3 is lack of titles or compelling titles when Xbox has so many exclusives. A lot of titles come out for both but I've heard the lack of games being a huge complaint against PS3.
Also PS3, from what I've seen on the hand full of games I have had, PS3 doesn't go past 720p, although I may be wrong on that. It's not that it can't, it just doesn't by default and most games aren't written to do so. Xbox will go as high as 1080p and most games are capable of it. If this is a concern for you.
Xbox has a larger hard drive, but PS3 has built in Wi-Fi.
I like the controller for Xbox a lot more than the PS3.

I can't really give an opinion on the PS3, but it was the price and the number of titles that sold be on the Xbox. As a non-hardcore gamer myself, I don't think it really matters which one you get, they are both pretty good fun.

Like I said, it really comes down to what exclusives you're more interested in.
I'd say Bioshock is reason enough to buy a 360.
Then again, God of War is enough reason to buy a PS3.
Whatever you get, you'll be immensely happy.

Everyone here is right, just weigh out the pros and cons of both machines and chose the one that suits you best, I chose the PS3 for the blu-ray, wifi and I like the games that are out and that are coming out. I never really cared much for the halo series and I'm not a "hardcore gamer" so I needed a system that would mulit-task with my needs.
I'm not a hardcore gamer either. I've always been a fan of shooters. I rarely if ever play online as I usually get my ass handed to me. I like a racing title or two as well (Burnout Revenge), as long as they're arcade like and not a sim.

I like the same types of games as you. How up to date are you on the PS2 games that you like? If you've already played all of them and are willing to bet on more good games like that coming out on the PS3 then the PS3 is probably your best bet. If you're behind (like me) then it might make more sense to get a 360 and a PS2 and wait out to see if good games come out for the PS3.
It takes a long time to get through those games at a couple hours a week. After I lost my memory card when we moved I had to start Dragon Quest VIII over again and I still have Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and Digital Devil Sagas I and II along with all of the Tony Hawk and Tekken games to get through again. The PS4 will probably be out before I get all that done. I'm actually considering buying another PS2 just in case they discontinue them and mine breaks.

I just assumed that, because of the built-in Blu-Ray component, PS3 could handle up to 1080p.

EDIT: I just found this, which suggests the PS3 does handle 1080p. How reliable this source is, I do not know.

Well H8, actually the PS3 is better in that dept. The 360 does upscale games to 1080p, but that just means it stretches the 720p pixels. It doesn't actually look better.
The PS3 has far better 1080p support, because it can handle it slightly better.
Well... for games on the Xbox that aren't 1080 natively, yes it will stretch them. But most games, that I've purchased anyway, are natively 1080 compatible.
PS3, while perfectly capable runs most games at 720, when their Xbox counterparts will run at 1080, the option for upscaling doesn't exist.
It's a rather shallow sampling on both ends for me as far as what games do what, but 1080 seems to be pretty regular on Xbox whereas on PS3, most games can run at 720 at the highest.
