Default Beware Of Magnet Swaps In New Dimarzios!

I'm doing a ceramic to A5 magnet swap in a brand new Dimarzio and they are literally using something like super glue to hold the magnet to the base! I'm in the process of breaking off pieces of the original magnet and will probably have to use a dremel tool to remove the old magnet...This is not a fun thing and I'm warning anyone that wants to try this! I'm pretty good at this sought of thing, but at the same time,I risk screwing up a brand new pickup!

Since I can not get the magnet off the baseplate,I'll now have to replace the baseplate with another one and the new magnet! It's plain to see that Dimarzio wants us to leave their pickups alone!

What's Dimarzios deal? They don't want a forum. They glue their magnets. They don't do custom shop stuff. They charge dealers an arm and a leg for buy ins, and they replace awesome pickups like the Virtual Paf. It's like they WANT to go out of business or something!

Then it shouldn't be a problem, since it doesn't make much sense to swap magnets in a pickup you really like....

    Which Dimarzio was it?

I have an ancient Super D that's glued together as well (and not potted, either).

    Brand new Super Distortion....LOL

Seems the Dimarzio ceramic magnets are not as wide but taller...When you switch over to A5,the magnet is wider but not as tall and there's more gap between the top of the magnet and the bobbins....Kinda sucks!

I have some DMZ pickups that don't have glued magnets? I wonder if it is something new or if it is particular to certain models?

The VHPAF that I had was not glued, but the wax they pot with is extra strength sticky... kinda like fly paper for tinkerers.

edit: also, I just got an e-mail back, they don't do rewinds either. But they do answer e-mails very promptly.

Ya should have used a bit of acetone to loosen up/remove the glue. That will do the trick fairly easily. Just dont get it near anything plastic.

I had to use a hammer and a small chisel to get the magnet off the plate! It was on there to stay!

Maybe both? I've worked on other Dimarzios where the magnets just slid right out...Maybe with all the folks doing magnet swaps,DMZ doesn't want people messing with the magnets in their pickups now?

Acetone can work wonders. Good stuff.
