The one on my fridge that is shaped like Tennessee.
No faves- I've had sucky A2, A5, and ceramic mag pups (and one A3 too)- and I have owned and played stellar examples of each.
I'd say from the big 3, I tend to gravitate towards Ceramic and A2. Very few A5 pups do it for me.
I'm an internet person. All we do is waste time evaluating things that have next-to-zero real world significance.

I voted A8, because old Ibanez Super 70s are my favorite humbuckers.
A2 is a close second, and they kick ass in single coils.

depends on the application, and the rest of the pickup. a5 is gonna be a bit bright as a single in a strat or tele. however a2 will be just right if the rest of the pickup is good. however a2 may not be right in a neck spot. it really does depend.

No fav. Depends on the pickup it's going in! Usually buy a5 because I get what I need with it. Have some ceramic and some a2.

G&L's, MFD pickups are ceramic so my answer is ceramic.

At the moment it's ceramic (DD).....but soon I'll get an A8 and put it in a JB in one of my HSS Strats........I'll have a full report.

so far i have decided the more PAF designs for my report will have the option for A2 or A5, and the higher output either A8 or Ceramic. But im not sure what i should go with for the following pickups.
50's strat
60's strat
hot strat
Broadcaster
Telecaster/neck/bridge
Warmoth Split Jazzmaster (Zhangbucker Crushbucker UOA5 splat, Cherrick tapped)
Dunlop Crybaby

I'd say A5, as it's the most malleable sound-wise using degaussing. Never muddy.

C5 and '59n are my favorite pickups, so A5 for me.
But I do like the X2N7, so ceramic is a close 2nd.

Or is it the PU's wind, or the guitar's wood that makes a magnet seem less than ideal?
The virtue of A5's is that they start off with plenty of treble, and you can easily reduce that for the bridge with 250K pots & .100 caps. When you have an A2 and need brightness, it's harder to get enough treble, without a magnet switch, especially in the neck when you're already using 500K's.
While there are certain magnets that we favor, it's nice having the flexibility to swap them instead of buying another PU & hoping that sounds better. Actually, I wish we had more magnets to choose from, more tones in between the current ones.

After much experimentation I've concluded that the sound in my head is an A4 humbucker. Highs, mids and lows in perfect balance. It's vintage but it rocks.
