My dad woke me up around 11:00 and told me he would buy me a coffee if I went into town with him. We got in the Rover and I was doing fine. He bought me a grande latte and I started getting nervous. When he gives me caffeine he wants me to do work for him. We arrived at College Peat and Landscaping, I wanted to run right there.
We got a load of dirt (topsoil) for my mom and put it in the back of the Rover. Now... Its got a 1 ton bed, but only about 60 or so HP and at most 120 lbs of torque. The other thing I should mention is that the ignition timing should be set to the weight of the vehicle... Its rather simple... You load up the car, run it up a steep hill in 2nd gear, if it misfires you retard the timing, if it doesn't fire you can either advance or just call it good. its not a complicated thing to do but its very important if your going to be carrying a load.
We had the timing set at a decent advance, not really sure what it was but it was set to haul the curb weight of a light land rover, about 2500 - 3000 lbs.
We added about 500 lbs of dirt. We were running cheap 87 octane gas (we usually run at least 90).
Whenever we would rev the car above 3500 or so it would misfire. We had to take the trip home at about 40 mph on flats and 30 - 35 on hills. The last steep hill we went up we were going around 20 - 25 mph.
My mom is happy to haver her dirt, but I'm as twitchy as a shell shocked vietnam vet.
