    Default Neck humbucker recommendation?

    Hey all!

I am installing a Wolfetone Timbrewolfe (15k)(like a C-5 with more mids) into my 11 lb black LP Standard run through an Egnater MOD 50 head and Ear Candy 212 cab with Sugar Cones speakers. Can anyone help me pick a neck pickup? I use the neck pickup with the bridge pickup for some clean and the neck pickup sometimes alone for clean or lead. I may even split the pickups and use the center position since I hat split coils alone.

I am not a huge neck pickupuser so I was trying to go cheap, like a used Rio Grande Buffalo bucker, new or used Duncan 59 or Jazz neck oe AII Pro or PGn, Gibson Classic 57 or Burstbucker or something, even a Dimarzio?

    Thanks!

    Rich

I have a Seth BRIDGE in the neck of my L.P, and a '59 BRIDGE in the neck of my SG3000... both work really well. Very useable sounds as by playing with the tone controls I can play nice bright but smooth lead, or roll it back to get real bluesy. To me by having bridge pick ups in the neck socket of these 2 thick bodied, mahogany guitars... helps keep the sound tight and articulate. I did try a PGn in the L.P and I wasn't happy... now it will stay with the Seth.

For a 15K bridge with all those mids I think your on the right track with the Jazz or PearlyGates to match up tonewise and volume as well.

I like the PGn in a LP. It just feels like home to me.

I thought more mids as well but the Wolfeotne website says slight scoped mids (slight), not sure how slight but I used this pickup years ago and that is why I am buying another.

So, I should look at some bridge pickups as well? Maybe the Jazz or 59 bridge for the neck.

The Jazz and PGn have always interested me though. Will an Alnico II magnet balance okay with the AV of the Wolfetone? I thought you should use the same magnet neck and bridge in a perfect world.

+1 for the PGn, sounds like what a les paul neck pickup should sound like - fat and articulate, fairly bright, with a really girthy single note tone under gain.

I've tried the Jazz n 59n and PGn in my Les Paul......so far my favorite pickup has been the 59. Some say it's "boomy", I call it "warm"

I have a Alnico II to try next week.......
Only you can decide what "good" sounds like!

What about the fact that I have a 15k bridge pickup? Should I look more at the output of the neck pikcup more than anything?

I've used the PGn with a Dime, Distortion, Super D, C5, Custom, and PATB-1 to good effect. Mixing mag types is perfectly fine, and output is easily balanced by raising and lowering pickups.

I think I might try the Wolfetone TimbreWolf/Duncan 59 combo first and go from there. THANKS!

I've just tried the '59n and Seth neck pickup in an Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I like the '59 for it's creamy sound and the bass does kind of make up for the slight mids scoop. I like the Seth Lover neck pickup even better though. It's rich, very warm, full and "alive" with character. I really like the pronounced mid range and being able to shape the bass and treble around the middle of the tone. However, I like a neck tone that pretty much everyone here would consider "muddy", which I consider to be warm.

Yeah unpotted! Very easy to change the magnet - i have a short A5 swapped in. I like it scooped but not overly boomy bass, great definition. I can even play full distorted solo without drowning in the mud. Great!

Yeah, but it seems to not be a problem unless you use an absurd amount of gain. I think the unpottedness adds to its overall sound.
