    Default Another gas thread

Since you guys are all giddy about the current gasoline prices, I thought I'd let you in on something I heard on the news today. It is going to be $5.00 a gallon by November! Woo-hoooo!!! Bring it on Baby!

$5 would be a conservative estimate.

good -- soon the common man won't be able to afford gas and the highways will be clear for those of us who don't NEED our five dollar bills.

The past three weeks I drove slower, with an "imaginary egg" under my foot. My 2.0 liter 1990 Camry with 209,000+ miles and autotranny got:

    Week 1: 33 MPG
    Week 2: 34.9 MPG
    Week 3: 31.9 MPG

I really think that the downhill runs in the mornings, under high manifold vacuum is helping boost my numbers. This turns off the injectors. I descend/climb 4,000 feet to about 800 feet daily.

I don't have an engine vacuum gauge installed, but I have trained myself to know how to instinctively get better mileage because of the vehicles with vacuum gauges I have driven in the past.

Week 2 had particularly hot weather. Humans tend to drive nuttier in hot weather, even though engines can be down on power by 15%. San Diego weather is awesome for power, when the air is cool and dense, with foggy mist in the air. Driving the thinner air on the High Desert in summer takes a dose of reality in that the air is thin, and dropping a heavy foot on the throttle will murder your mileage.
