Question Are they Gibson '57 Classic?

    Hi guys,

I think I need a hand here... so's the deal:

I've bought a second hand set of Gibson '57 Classic. I've took'em out myself from a Gibson guitar. They measure 8.68k and 8.99k.

Today I've got another set of Gibson Classic '57 to put in a 335 copy and, measuring'em, I've found out they measure "only" 8.22k and 8.54k.

Do you think Gibson changed their specs overtime or one of the sets' not a Classic '57?

Both sets have the same "Patent Applied For" sticker...

I can't find the real specs on the net... can any of you help?

    Yours very truly,

Well Gibson does get a little loose with the specs. However the Classic PLUS runs in the high 8s, so they prolly are Classic plus models.

Most pup have a resistance range like for example i have seen two differen new JB's read different
one was at 16.1K another was 16.8K
most classic 57' pluses a have seen read at 9K and up so chances are you have the regular classics just wound a touch higher.

It's very difficult, if not impossible to get the exact same ohms when making one kind of PU. Minute varaitions in the raw materials are part of the reason, along with slight differences in winding so many turns on the coils. I've always found variations in the PU's I've bought, versus the "official" specs. the ohms listed by manufacturers are a target, but in the real world they'll vary plus or minus. Also, multi-meters probably have some differences in them too.

After I've been all over the internet trying to figure this out, and comparing all the readings I could come up with, add my own, I think I'll gonna save me some time and just make two sets with one of each and call it a day. The set will be a '57 Classic /'57 Classic plus, so I'll be putting together the 8.22k with the 8.68 and the 8.54 with the 8.99.

Everybody will be happy this way, and I'm gonna be able to enjoy a quiet sunday.

If you could choose one of the sets, or make your own with those p'ups, which one would you choose?

Lt, wire specs generally are +/- 10% and since all 4 pickups were probably wound from different spools of wire you will probably see different readings.

The human body can only tell the difference in most things after 10% and I doubt you can hear the difference in 2 pickups with a 5% variation in DC resistance.

Of course if you REALLY want to hear a difference, you will!

The DC resistance also changes with temperature, and quite a lot.

They are most likely 57 Plus's rather than 57 classics.
