Thumbs up PRS Johnny Hiland: Perfect right out of the box!

Anyone actually find a guitar that was perfect right out of the box? Perfect neck, pickups, set up, switching? I have, but it's not mine.....PRS Johnny Hiland. Praisegeetarman just got one in yesterday and holy cow.....that is the perfect guitar, IMHO. Just the night before we were doing speaker testing for my RX Jr and both commented on what a great benchmark tone his CE24 with Seth/Jazz was getting. When compared to the JH through the same amp(/13 LDW 17/39) the CE sounded like a blanket was thrown over the cab. I hope that Keith chime's in here with his own review of his new guitar, but I now have severe GAS for a JH.

Thats funny...I played one just Sunday, killer axe, PRS guitars in general do NOT appeal to me...I have found that in my experience that a typical Fender or Gibson get me the tones that I prefer to hear. All that siad the JH was a pretty killer guitar, I really wish it wasn't 24 frets...I just never get along with the neck pickup in a 24 fret guitar, but few niggles aside it was a killer axe for sure.

I really want to try one of them. Too bad for the trem. But aside from that, the specs are brilliant. Pretty close to what my dream guitar would be like as a matter of fact...

I'll have to ask him to let me try his when I see him at a small music store this upcoming Saturday. I have never touched one.

I watch the video of Johnny demoing it regularly. Amazing guitar and player
Buy the book in my avatar. It's pretty cool.

Ryan is right about the Johnny Hiland. I bought the guitar to get the neck with the narrower nut and the blade switching. My only hope was that is sounded as good as my CE24 with the Seth/Jazz combination. I have now had the Hiland for several days and I can safely say it puts the CE to shame. The pickups are nice and chimey without being overly bright and the bridge pickup has a character to it that the Seth does not. I am a huge fan of the Seth bridge and I have a Seth neck with an A5 in neck of my hollow body schecter, but the Hiland pickups in my opinion are superior to the Seths. Another thing that is nice about the Hiland over the CE is the double fret marker on the side of the neck on the 12th fret. This may sound funny, but I have trouble keeping track of the 12th fret on my CE if I am switching guitars a lot. With the Hiland, the side marker on the 12th fret is a double dot, which makes it easier to keep track of on the fly.

Haha, you fools and your need for looking to know where you are on the fretboard, mwahahahaha. My custom necks are easier to finish because I don't require those dots, lol. Johnny is a hell of a player and a nice guy, he is also legally blind. Shot the poop with him over the net through a few emails before. Does that model have a maple fretboard? I want my next PRS to be a SC250 or a Tremonti model. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a JH model or Swamp Ash Special model either. He is also a HELL of a blues player. What does he use for amps usually/?

Yes, maple fretboard. Johnny uses a pair of RI '65 Twins and a Koch Powertone 2

Johnny is actually from the little town in Maine where my wife's family lives. Last year when we were visiting my mother in-law, I stopped by the little music store, & was told that Johnny was going to play there that night, & asked me to come (he was in town for his sisters graduation). Right after that sentence came out of his mouth, in walked Johnny! I shot the breeze with him for a bit, talked Teles (I have 3, including a Crook), when he told me that he had a PRS now, with PU's wound to sound close to the Bardens. I told him I'd have to try one, & he opened the case, & let me take her for a spin. What a nice guy! Later that night, he played for about 50 of us, opening with Gattons' "Funky Mama", & nailed the Barden tone. You will have a good time seeing him, & I'm sure he'll let you try his PRS. By the way, if it's a small show, ask him to play some Gatton. He loves to, & he includes all of the fretboard acrobatics......don

He is playing the grand opening of a long time Atlanta music store that picked up and moved from just outside of the city to the sticks up near where my parents live. It is a small store out near the country so I expect a smallish crowd and a chance to meet him.

I'll bet he tore it up. I found out where he was playing early enough to go but still missed it.
