my local shop has a stack of new Crate amps they are blowing out for half price or less... for $229 i can buy either a 1x12 18 watter or a 2x12 version for the same..... i'm interested but don't need it... but i wonder if i should save my coin and use the $230 on something else..... still a killer deal

They get really mixed reviews. Most of the negative flack comes from people who can afford better and need the satisfaction of owning an expensive amp.

I cannot afford better. I own an older crate tube amp, pretty different from the current models. But considering it's quality in sound and construction I would surely buy one again.

also, define "don't need it". Does that mean you already have a bunch of amps? or you have a decent amp and dont really need to switch it with something else?

At least go for the 18 watter- a small, yet effective amp that can cover lot's of situations, and some recording.
I have an old VC20, I use for practice, and, when people call me up just to get together and jam- change a few tubes, get a better speaker, and people will be asking you what kind of amp that is-(I removed the Crate emblem) and, using a 2x12 extention cab, it can almost keep up with my Marshall.

I bought a V-32 about 6 months ago for $400.00 out the door and I thought I got a decent deal. There is a 5 year warranty..that is $80.00 a year for a gig ready tube amp.

It is even sweeter now.....$229.00 for a back up amp is a phenomenal deal.

I do want to upgrade my speaker to a 12h30 clone, but as is, it is a good sounding amp and takes to pedals well.

They are an incredible deal for the money. Just like if you could get a brand new PV C30 for $300.00. The only reason to not spend the money would be if you were saving every penny for a Reeves, D13, Fargen, etc. etc. But if those amps are out of your price range, then there is no shame in owning one of these Crates that have been on sale. They sound good, they are good, they're a good deal. Maybe ditch the stock tubes and look for some good Eminence speakers. Or better yet, some of those great offerings from WGS.

I have a Crate V32 that is 2 years old and still works and sounds great.

I have a Crate GT 80 that sounds like garbage.

As long as you stick with their tube amps and dont treat them too harshly Crate makes a deceint amp for the money.

They don't hold up well to abuse but they make a nice small tube amp.

I love the Vintage Club 20w 1x12 my bass player has my old one and it is a kicking little amp that gets Vox-y tones pretty easily and has plenty of gain too. If that 18w is just the updated version I don't think you can go wrong.

I checked out that sale. That's insane. If I were in the market for a new amp I would snatch one of the 18 watt 112 combos for 150 bucks. There's gotta be something to it.

I've always liked Crate tube amps. I haven't tried the new ones, but have had a VC5212 (50w) for over 10 years and love it.

I got a V18-112 about two weeks ago and think it's great. I have been running it clean and hitting the front with either a MXR Zakk OD or the SD Tweak Fuzz and have been very happy. The only thing I might change is the speaker, I want zero speaker break up(any recommends?). I want to be able to really crank it up clean and hit it with pedals.
The amp has insane reverb on it. I have it set on one or two and thats plenty. Set it to five and you are in Dick Dale mode.

I jammed on my blue voodoo for several years and it never once let me down. Crate gets a bad rap anymore.

    the 18watt 1x12...

I just ordered a warehouse reseal from zzsounds for $134 Shipped. Fingers crossed it should be cool...

I played through one and hated the speaker and not worth $300. But i have 2 Celestion70/80's and a EminenceTexas Heat sitting here. and $134 shipped is not bad.

Full report ASAP assuming the order doesnt get ditched and cancelled.

I really loved my Eminence Tonkers in my Traynor ycv80. they had this luke warm mid tone that was very british but you had to really push them even with a 80watt 4x6l6 amp to get them to breakup.

but for that amp i think a canabis rex would be great and they just get sweeter and dont really get nasty at all even at full blast.

I ordered the V18-212. I hope they are able to come through, that's a great deal. I wanted the 18W so's I could crank it. I'm not sure about the 2 speakers vs. 1, but I am hoping it will add wideness and some depth. Thanks, guys!

I used a VFX5112 for quite some time, largely happily. That wasn't necessarily their "low end" amp (in any sense of the term, har har) but I found it met a lot of my needs for a long time. Here we go again....

The Crate V series tube amps are great for the money. I agree, they wouldn't hold up real well to abuse. I got my V32H head and matching 2-12 cab just for plugging into when I'm in the living room, and to record in my home studio. The cream tolex and gold piping and logo looks great in the living room!

I guess the V30 was made in USA. I didn't discover these until MF had the V32 on sale. I stopped at GC and plugged in to one and was pretty impressed. Great overdriven tones. The clean channel does sound good with a pedal in front too.

Only gripe I have is the pots are scratchy. I suppose sometime I'll have to take the chassis out and try to spray pot cleaner in the volume and gain pots and see if that helps.
