Default I wish all my guitars were 24 fret

I only have one 24 fret guitar, the Jackson SL3, but I really miss the extra two frets now when I play anything else.
Certain songs are easier to play with the 24 frets - even if they weren't originally done on a 24 fret guitar. I'm thinking the solo in Gary Moore's "Walking By Myself" as a good example. Without a 24 fret neck that solo requires a lot of bending, and, to be honest, it's hard enough to play that solo as it is without trying to bend so many notes! The 24 fret neck simply makes it slightly easier to attempt it.

I'd be happy if all my guitars were 24 fret thru necks but retained their classic looks. I mean, a 24 fret Les Paul or Jackson Rhoads? That'd be awesome.

    Or am I just lazy?

doesn't ESP / LTD make a lot of 24-fret Les Paul and SG-shaped guitars?

I've never really thought it mattered that much. Even if you compare a vintage Fender to a Jackson, we're only talking about 3 notes. And after having a few neck-thrus, I don't really care for it that much. I'm not sure what it is, but I never end up bonding with them, and they go by the wayside while my strat copies hang around.

I could not care less. I play songs done on 24 fret guitars on my 21 fret telecasters with few issues. I kind of like bending up to reach a note. It gives a different sound and feel to the song.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

What about a note originally done on the 24th fret and bent way up.............?

Play it somewhere else on the neck as a harmonic, fret it with the edge of the pick, use a whammy bar/pedal, etc....

    You can bend a harmonic?
Use a whammy pedal? Seems like it'd be much easier just to have 24 frets!

My point was that it's not impossible, and that things that at first seem to be limitations can inspire creativity.

And yeah, play a pinch/artificial harmonic and bend the crap out of it. Or, play a natural harmonic and bend the string behind the nut ala Jimi.

Dunno, my current no.1 is my 24 neck-thru and I STILL get plenty of bending (up to the 24 rth fret on the high E), I don't wanna know where that'd be with my 21 fret Strat

Not only that but I belong in that minority that thinks that a 22 fret neck 'bucker sounds too boomy.
A 24 fret neck 'bucker however sounds just perfect (splits a hell of a lot better too!!!)

'Walking by Myself' --- are we talking about the Jimmy Rogers blues tune here? I can only cringe at the idea of Gary Moore playing that...

Yeah, but my point was, you can do all that but with an extra two frets on a 24 fret guitar!

That. But the studio version has a couple of notes much easier to play on a 24 fret guitar.

I actually prefer the tone of neck pickups on 24-fret guitars. more clear and defined, and that "2nd octave harmonic node" story is complete BS once you start fretting notes.

Playing wise, not really a huge issue to me. When I'm playing stuff that'd work best with say a Tele, I don't generally have a need to go up that high. When I'm doing more shreddy-based stuff that I'd use a superstrat for, though, I can see using the full 24-fret range.

I suppose I've only actually noticed the benefit since I joined a band and we're doing covers. Some songs, even AC/DC ones, that require large bends to reach high notes (I think Livewire here), are easier to play properly on a 24 fret neck, without making mistakes.
As for the "neck tone", my only 24 fret guitar has 2 single coil sized pups, so it means nothing to my guitar. I suppose it might matter to someone using a 2 humbucker setup, but I get the best of everything with the SL3.
    It's a cracking guitar really!

You can bend the D up to an E on a 22 fretter. I own and play both.

What can you bend up to an a 24 fretter...?
It's not a question of what you CAN do, it's a question of how easy it is and what ELSE you can do with it, as a tool. Which a guitar ultimately is.

You would be able to go up to the F# and maybe a G from that last fret by bending...that could be cool. I still like the good old 22 fretters.

Yeah, I mean, I never noticed it until I joined/started this band and we're doing stuff that needs the high notes.
Now I've got so used to it, I find my Jackson SL3 is the guitar I'd have to take to a desert island, thanks to the thru neck and extra frets. It just does everything better than any other guitar I have.
I love playing my Black Beauty, but it's so much harder to hit those REALLY high bends, whereas the SL3 is simple. It's a no-brainer.

Yeah, an LP makes you work for those last few high notes.

Sure, but you may not have thought to do the other stuff. You'd have simply gone for the high E and gone on about your business. I'm not anti-24 fret at all, it's just one of those things I totally don't care about.

BTW, it's funny that AC/DC, a band who have always used shorter scale 22 fret guitars is easier to cover with a Strat-scale 24 fret guitar. Well, it's either funny, or more proof that it really doesn't matter

To each his own, and enjoy your Jackson
