    Default SEPTEMBER 18th, 1970

Its hard to believe that it was 38 years ago that Jimi Hendrix died. His music is still going strong. What led me to start this thread is on my way to work one of the local DJ's was asking the listening audience who they felt(if anyone exists?) has taken on the mantle that Jimi once owned. I don't think there is anyone. Jimi Hendrix was as unique a player as there ever was or will be. When you look at the whole package that Jimi was.... his playing both lead and rhythm. His songwriting is right up there with any great writers and in many cases surpasses many. His showmanship was on a different scale than everyone else, and his voice. Although he thought his voice was not great.... I disagree I thought his vocals made some of his great songs what they became.

RIP Jimi Hendrix........ We miss you!

RIP. One good thing followed this, though. Joe Satriani quit football and started playing guitar seriously. Without the impact of Satch, the world would be worse place. (Well, he should have told Hammett not to overuse his wah.) No Satch, Vai or Hammett (Exodus and Metallica would have been a bit different without him, and Megadeth possibly wouldn't exist.

Oh man, I'm glad you posted this thread. I forgot today is my mother's birthday. The only way I can ever remember it is that Hendrix died on Sept. 18, and that's the date she was born...different years of course.

    R.I.P. Jimi!!

Every time I listen to Jimi I hear or learn new things and am entertained as much as the first time I heard it. RIP.

It's always so difficult to say whether or not anyone new has "taken on the mantle." There will never be another Jimi, Beatles, Elvis, yadda, yadda, yadda. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. The music scene and the world have changed so much since then it's impossible to compare or expect a successor. There are great guitarists out there, but there will never be another Jimi.

He was quoted as saying that you only sacrifice what you love, and he loved his guitar.

so creative, inspired so many, and still does ...

it amazed me that he could play complex parts on guitar while singing at the same time

and yeah, I've read he was VERY self conscious about his singing, but honestly, I never thought twice about it

a GREAT rhythm player, who just happed to SMOKE at playing lead, and completely opened up the artistic limits of electric guitar

Agreed. There may be someone one day, but I haven't seen or heard that person yet.

We should all be wearing black armbands today. Jimi has inspired so many musicians...not just guitarists...hell, Miles davis was influenced by Jimi!

Any of you guys who think his playing is simple needs to remember (as Bludave
pointed out)..play his stuff and sing it at the same time...absolute musical genius.

I'm not sure anyone could take on that mantle, in so far as it's been done. Jimi is the icon.

Take EVH for example, how our jaws dropped when we first heard him and the massive influence he had on guitar technique. Enormous achievement, but he and Jimi are totally separate pillars of the edifice of rock guitar greatness.

RIP Jimi and thank you for the music!

What impresses me is that he could well have been another gunslinger, moving from band to band. He was with Little Richard, Curtis Knight and the Isley Bros. among others, but something -- I don't know if it was drugs, emotional turmoil or what -- something drove him to be an original voice. Something burned in him to be "Jimi", not just James Marshall Hendrix, or Jimmy James (& the Blue Flames).

He didn't assume a mantle, he created his own place. I'm not sure if he left it to anyone to pass on, because it wouldn't fit anyone else -- they'd be seen as "clones" or "tribute players" (e.g., Randy Hansen). Randy's a serious player, but unfortunately, almost everyone sees him that way.

This is true, but I thought the guitar he torched was Pete Townsends? In any regard, Jimi's style and abilities as a song writer were so unique that there will never be another "Jimi". Which I think is a good thing.

Good point. Jimi's playing alway takes center stage and rightly so. But the man could sing too. And not just recite lyrics, he could put an amazing amount of feeling and soul into his voice while his fingers were making that Strat howl with a totally different kind of soul and feeling. And judging by all the dialog, intros and outtakes you can hear in the live recordings, he seemed like a real humble guy with an awesome sense of humor.

I just got into Jimi recently, and I have been listening to 3 of his albums over and over for the past few weeks. He rightfully gets recognition for his guitar wizardry, but his voice was so cool.

I was born the year he died, and when I was the age Jimi was when he died, I had his old booking agent as my manager....Ron Terry. He used to tell us a lot of Jimi stories that we'd never read in books. Plus, Seymour's got some good old Hendrix stories as well.

This thread is making me more excited to be getting my Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz in a few days, from Millsart.
