I suck I guess. Can't figure out all those weird harmonies. Anyone care to share?
I won't post a link because I think everyone knows it.
Let's help the world be a funnier place!!

I had to check it out just now...
He's tuned down a half-step... but you do that and it's all there in the 5th position pentatonic, working off that open string drone in A flat. The "weird harmonies" though... are you talking about the double stops? I find that stuff easier to play finger style then with a pick. The rest of it's just hammers & pull offs, mostly on the B & G strings.
I can't figure this out. Did you actually play it on your guitar, or just guessing by lsitening to it? Something about the riff sounds completely different... I donno what it is.
:P:P:P:P:P:P:P I saw Gearjoneser had replied, and got excited... If I wasn't a SDUGF newb I woulda known what to expect. :P
It doesn't sound very pentatonic-y to me, am I so wrong?

I'm even questioning whether or not I have those double stop intervals right. It's the first half of the riff that requires some figuring out. The second half is just a riff with a trill'ed G string. It's a good riff, but after 100 times, it get's old, and that's why they changed it.
I still like the riff though.
word. Trying to figure it out is making me appreciate it more than it was ever meant to be. It's a cool riff, for sure. The only part I get is the trill... But I'm so rusty anyways I really do suck.

Yeah, I grabbed a guitar the other night & gave it 7 or 8 passes. Not enough to really nail it, but enough to get the vibe. At first I had to check my tuning because it was between tones haha But, it's down a 1/2 step for sure. It's all keyed off that open 5th string...

I dont know it and I can't hear it. Post a link and I'll hook you up.

Hmmmm. Where these is will, there is no way? Is that how it goes?
so far I have the open A, the trill, and a few other notes, but not the double-stop ringing strings stuff.

Hold the 1st string - 5th fret A with your pinky. There is a quick hammer on the 2nd string 3rd to 5th fret with your 1st and 3rd fingers and then slide your first finger from the 3rd to second fret for the c# on the way back down. The 3th string A and open G/ open 5th string thing you should be able to get by ear.
Before the trill the chord is an A with the 5th fret E and A held with the pinky again.
I know its cryptic but once you get the motion under the pinky on A first string thing down it should fall into place.

Robert S.
Just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my pink unicorn horsey, er I mean HEART.
I'll check this out on monday, as I'll be out of town this weekend. But thanks for figuring this out man! I owe ya one.

You're welcome supernosher. I started out my ear training when I was 10 or 11 and the first song I figured out was Angie by the Stones. Back in the dark ages we didn't have internet or tabs and song books usually had open chord blocks over paino arrangements, often transposed into off keys that were easier to play. If you wanted to learn a song you had to listen to it. I learned how to play guitar by figuring out how other people were doing it.
The biggest secret to playing other peoples music, especially rock is that the most simple way is usually the right way. Most rock guitar players are not rocket scientists and many of them were chemically altered in one way or another so many of the licks and hooks are very "under hand". If it seems too hard you are probably doing it wrong.
Have fun with it and experiment around with it. Holding down chorus tones with movement underneith is a somewhat common technique and it can be applied to many places and positions on the neck. SRV liked that kind of thing and there are a couple of examples in his version of Little Wing, both with fingered motion and bends.
Peace.
