This will give you some insight as to SRV's guitars & amps as well as any customizing that was done. Supposedly the original pickups (59's) were rewound by Fneder, but there is no proof of it. My understanding is when Fender received this guitar to create the SRV model all the electronics were measured and the pups were in the 6K range. For singles I would not consider those overwound. He also had a left handed Trem arm in his guitar seeing he was a huge Jimi Hendrix and Otis Rush fan (both played right handed guitars upside down), he opted for a left handed arm. Bass Frets just so he would not have to refret it so frequently.
As far as amps; many people believe he used Vibroverbs and he did, but not until later in his career. Most all of his early stuff was dome with Super Reverbs. Later he used Vibroverbs, Marshalls and Supers. He did just the opposite as one would think. He A/B'd the Fenders and the Marshalls, but he used the Marshall for cleans & the Fenders for his dirty stuff. Things to listen too and videos
Soul to Soul. IMHO this is his best tone on record.
Live at the Macombo. This is a great video of him early in his Career. There is also some stuff of him on Austic City Limits. He appeared on this show 2X about 3 or 4 years apart, so it is interesting to listen to them one after the other and see how much his tone changed over the years. Great Player, and Great tone.
