Yeah, so I bought an 8 channel mixer tonight. A Tascam M-35. Oldie but a goody, especially for only a hundred bucks. This guy has never used a mixer before. It's been a rollercoaster of emotion and a huge learning experience over the past few hours.
Sheer joy, followed by frustration, followed by buyers remorse, then to understanding, feeling like a complete moron, and then back to sheer joy.
God, I was suffering buyers remorse something terrible a few moments ago. The mixer sounded muddy. I've got my cd player playing tunes through it and it just sounded muddy. I've got L and R from cd player hooked up to Tape In on channels 1 and 2 respectively. Was like a layer of muck over the sound. It was actually starting to give me a headache. Then I turned just the right knob and nearly jumped out of my seat.
I HAD THE BLOODY THING SUMMING TO MONO!!!
Pan hard left on subgroup 1, pan hard right on subgroup 2 and VOILA! Beautiful stereo sound!
Oy, I'm happy I made this purchase. I've been wanting to record my songs forever, especially because it might force me to actually finish some more of them, maybe help to get the stuff down before I lose the inspiration. Now I just need microphones and cables!
