    Question HSS strat

    Dear forum,

i plan to biult an alternative pickguard for my strat, which is currently equipped with Fender Hot Noiseless Singlecoils (the Jeff Beck ones). I plan to put an Humbucker in the bridgeposition, for playing mainly rock-Hardrock with it (no metal), so I plan to put som PAF type pickup in here (like SD 59?).
In the neckposition I would like to put a P90 pickup. Now the question ist, how well it would blend with the middlepickups to achive the 70ies Clapton inbetween sound. Can a normal p90 give you good results? OR would it be better to buy a P-Rails pickup and use the p90 for the neck and the singlecoil for the inbetween-sound? How about the Phat Cat pickups?
The middlepickup should blend well with the splitted HB in position 4 and with the neck pup in position 2, I have no idea which one I should take here.
Please make recommendations, thanks for reading. The overall sound level should be more or less constant.
    cheers

Clapton's 70's sounds were done with single coils. You could get a 59' wired to split in pos

thanks for your comments, I actually knew that about Clapton and the singlecoils, I just wanted to ask which Humbucker in splitting mode blends well together with the SC. I guess that e.g. the Invader won't get that job done very well...

The guys @ sd have told me that the JB splits well and might work. I was thinking about that for one of my Strats also.

jb is BRIGHT tapped, i dunno if you'll like it...

I'd go with a brobucker, but a '59 would probably work if you hooked a tone pot up to it

as for the p90, the forum just made something called a stra90 or something similar that was more or less a p90 in a strat sized cover that tapped into a regular strat pickup. Sounds like what you're wanting

If you can handle the noise (being a single coil), Phat Cats are fantastic. They can do all sorts of tones and feels from warm and jazzy to rocking to severely heavy. Very, very responsive, and always warm. Strat bridge pups are typically anemic and cold, but I put a PC in mine, and it completely solved the problem.

Like all Gibson-style designs, it's out of phase with Fender designs. I like the out of phase tone, but you might want to re-orient the magnets to be in phase.

Sounds like a job for P-Rails. Throw a pair in there, and go nuts. If those don't cover your bases, I'm not sure what will.
