Default 59n too bassy, Jazzb too thin..?

In the Les Paul... I LOVE the combo, but it's got its quirks.

    What should I look into?

I was thinking about putting the Jazz(b) into the neck, and one of the Customs or a Pearly Gates in the bridge. I'm looking for a rawer LP tone, more Bluesbreakers than Slash, Wylde, Sykes etc etc...

And I know I've only had the guitar for a day, but think about it, if it took me less than a day to figure this out, those quirks must be obvious The guitar sounds real nice and full accoutically... brighter than I thought too.

I don't know how well a jazz would pair with a pearly gates, but if you want raw LP tone, there isn't a better pickup on the market than the pearly gates.

I have the same problem when it comes to A5 in the neck. My next step is a 59/Jazz hybrid.

But alas if you can live with (or want) some extra kick from the neck, use a Screamin' Demon. It tightens up floppy neck positions considerably.

Oh, and degaussing will take out about 40-60% of the woof you hear in A5 neck pickups. Also, don't be afraid to lower the bass side. Between doing those two, the only other option would be artietoo's de-mud mod, it's a few resistors that reduce a few frequencies to give the 59n less 'boom' and more 'grind'.

The 59 is a little too bassy but it's not really muddy. Just a lot of lows. The bass side is already lowered but I'll play a little more with it. Probably lower the whole pup some more and use the polepieces.

Artie's de-mud mod is the only thing that keeps me from getting rid of my 59n For a raw, grindy Bluesbreakers tone, you do need something less clinical than your current set up. My first thought goes to the PG set, followed very closely by the Seth Lover set

in an LP, I like the 59 in the bridge and the pearly gates or Alnico pro 2 in the neck.

I would trade the Jazz bridge for a '59 bridge, and do the de-mud mod to both the neck and bridge 59's. It doesn't get any more versatile than 59's, and they have a classic bluesy tone.

all the above sound like great ideas. I would just like to add one essential ingredient:
    A marshall.

I have a Laney AOR which is essentially a Marshall JCM800 preamp, with extra boost I'm covered hehe

I may simply try this 59 in the bridge, or get a 59 or PG just for it. Also looking into a Bareknuckle Mule or Emerald... whatever comes up first! Thanks guys!

Lower the pickup and raise the poles, works wonders.

    Howdy,

I've got a '59 set in my ES-335 and yes, the neck is a bit "boomy". According to all my research this is supposed to be a very close to how a 335 would've sounded back in 1960 or so.
I look at this way: Even J-Lo or Halle Berry has "dragon breath" first thing in the morning, but I wouldn't hold it against them, because they're both gorgeous!
